I worked at NYSE full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Visibility, exposure can be a plus. Sits at the center of the financial world. Access to high profile clients and potential to build significant network

    Cons

Too many too list. Unless you are on the 6th floor or want to coast through your career and rot your brain don't sign up. The place is filled with mediocre middle managers who are protecting each other and being ignored by the small team at the top.

    Advice to Management

pay more attention to the role you were meant to play - raising capital for issuers. Stop obsessing with HFT and trading and focus on serving investors with a fair market and no rebates

    Pros

Good Brand, 401K, A lot of wisdom that is disappearing fast

    Cons

VPs are completely incompetent, survival of unfittest, go through the motions, senior management dead weight everywhere

    Advice to Management

Invest more in the success of your employees and work harder to motivate them each and every day. Your job as a manager is not to pretend to do your job, it is to constantly create ways to ensure your employees are strategically solving problems and working to maximize the reach of the NYSE. I hope ICE cleans this place up.

    Pros

Good Name to work for but lacking in technical ability and unwilling to invest in the necessary resources to make it an enjoyable place to work

    Cons

Too much management bloat with scarce resources on the ground doing the day to day work. It could be similar to other large financial institutions but frustrating for determined and focused technical people.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your employees. Promote people from within. Do not higher friends of friends from customers as a way in the door - award the people that are technically able and make the difference to your underlyings.
