Great chance to learn with experienced mudloggers

      Pros

I learned most of what I know about mudlogging while working at Canrig. There were a number of experienced loggers who were friendly in teaching a large group of young, green college graduates the finer points of how things work on the rig. Pay was decent for entry-level (very hard to get a raise though, even after proving yourself). And days off were somewhat flexible - 2:1 work/off ratio. Would have preferred a more standard month-on/off schedule, but no real complaints.

      Cons

Gas equipment was old and unreliable. Computer software had some gaping flaws that could easily corrupt an entire database worth of drilling data. Upper management was very slow in addressing employee concerns.

Stepping over a dollar to pick up a dime - poor quality equipment

      Pros

Not really a pro... but starts with good intentions... The company acts like they want to do the right thing... ... However, in reality, they have trouble actually following through. They try to adhere to industry standards but fall short of adherence costs money.

      Cons

Upper management repeatedly pillages the company with exorbitant pay levels compared to their counterparts are much better performing companies. Policies are put in place but are easily broken if it will save a few dollars here or there. They say they want to do the right thing, but as soon as they realize that doing the right thing might have an upfront cost they shy away. They are short sighted and repeatedly fail to see the long term value in quality equipment and retaining quality personnel

      Pros

Compared to similar companies in this field and in this area Nabors is close to the top. Working conditions are adequate. Uniforms and some safety equipment is provided. Laundering of uniforms is provided. Supervisor is considerate of time off if needed. Fellow workers are supportive and fun to work with. Pay is good if there is enough work. Direct supervisors are fair and supportive most of the time.

      Cons

Has good safety procedures, but not followed by management and employees are not well trained to deal with hazardous conditions. Safety equipment is not available to employees working in H2S gas. Upper management is VERY POOR and not very knowledgeable. Upper management often makes poor choices. Excessive paperwork (often unnecessary paperwork required). Always coming up with more and more procedures that are not always beneficial.

Lots happening, lots to do, little planning and thus bad deadlines, leadership centralized in one or two people.

      Pros

Comp is good, technology is always trying to push forward. Many good employees. Good breadth of technology and systems being used and thus good place to get experience and try different hats.

      Cons

Company struggling to transform into a suitable structure for the future. Could use a revamp of upper management. Without proper planning and project management in place all deadlines are suspect and give the impression that failures continue to happen.

A Small Company Obsessed With Looking Like a Big Company

      Pros

The people who work at Canrig are friendly and helpful, and a lot of them care about what they're doing. The pay is good and I never felt over-worked.

      Cons

Upper management is woefully inadequate. CEO has zero charisma. Lots of micromanagement. Safety program with quotas turns actual hazardous observations into just another piece of paperwork to submit. My impression after nearly two years at Canrig was that most (if not all) of the managers are obsessed with APPEARING to be a much larger organization, rather than with actually building the business. Frequently went through long periods with little to no work to do - but that didn't stop department from hiring additional staff because, hey, it's in the budget and big companies have lots of people. Got no impression at all that upper management (i.e. anybody above the level of my manager) cared anything about the work my department did.

Ok place to start out and get time in, but not somewhere you'd want to retire.

      Pros

Good after work activities: Toastmasters, sports teams, mentoring programs, etc. Occasional lunch provided with meetings. Monthly celebration of birthdays by birthday cake with a list of employee birthdays once a month. Happy with pay and bonuses, and tuition reimbursement is a plus.

      Cons

Lots of layoffs. Last Thanksgiving potluck they laid people off that had brought in desserts/dishes. It was awful. Parent company has total control over our company, and we are unable to get anything done. They also treat us like the redheaded step children. Extremely frustrating for employees. High turnover. So many people quitting, and so little being hired. Hiring for position replacements are a year or more, until then everyone just picks up the slack hoping they will someday hire someone. Management is poor, and barely any leadership. No room to grow or move around in different departments. Employees are discouraged from advancing. No outside training offered. Health benefits are awful. You only get one choice, and it isn't a very good one. Company promotes safety, but upper management has very poor attitude about leading by example.
