I have been working at Nan full-time

    Pros

A lot of down time and meet new people

    Cons

Not enough pay for what we do. Superintendent and foreman needs to teach the newbies more things to get us interested.

    Advice to Management

You need to properly train new employees and work along side with each and every individual. Give critical advice to help us better ourselves to help grow the company.

  3. "Project Engineer"

    Pros

Good people work here, some bad, but mostly good.
    Learn at a fast pace.
    Great place to learn.
If you make it to the top of the company you will be taken care of.

    Cons

Long hours resulting in no work life balance.
Saturday work is expected but never rewarded, you can work countless Saturdays but if you are sick on Monday you're out of luck.
10 days vacation, no sick leave.
Low salary and small end of the year bonus, even if you put in 55-65 hours a week.
Short days are 10 hours, which rarely happen. Expect 11 hours or more.
    No flexibility, you are owned.
No formal training, sink or swim mentality for new employees.
    High turnover and low retention.
No 401k match, profit sharing is minimal and takes 7 years to be fully vested.

  4. "Good company, lots of jobs, great opportunity to learn and advance. +55 hours a week, sometimes 60."

I worked at Nan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A local company, everyone is like family. There is always work to be done. Upward mobility. Gain lots of knowledge and experience because you are expected to perform.

    Cons

Long long long hours, the company prefers to see you all day. There is no work/life balance. Expect to put majority of your time toward the company. The company culture is exceptional in the aspect that everyone is friendly but expect to be there even when your work is done. There is no reward to finishing work early. High stress. Very low pay for the hours and responsibilities. It is a great company to learn from but your wallet will be empty. It'll keep you motivated.

    Advice to Management

Keep the talented and hard workers. Reward them when possible. Take care of those who put a lot towards the company.

I have been working at Nan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very family oriented, close nit and appreciative coworkers and bosses.

There's also something that's just so incredible about big machinery and physically seeing results and progress. This creates a very real satisfaction of feeling importance in your job.

I get to spend as much time as I see fit walking out in the field and inspecting work on the jobsite so I'm not anchored to my desk chair in front of a computer day in and day out.

There's lots of opportunity to network with local vendors and subcontractors. Nan also provides opportunities to get additional certifications related to construction at no cost and often invests in holding educational lectures from field professionals to educate young engineers.

    Cons

It can be tough keeping occupied and focused while doing menial and tedious paperwork.

90% of the job is lacking cognitive activity. Quite honestly a high school student could do this work.

The amount of hours expected vs the pay and amount of work is often unbalanced. This creates a serious work/life imbalance.

    Advice to Management

I work too many hours for how much I'm paid. As a result I become a less effective worker because more often than not I run out of work early in the day and have to stay because it's the culture of the job.

I'd also recommend trusting your employees with more routine tasks so you can delegate more of your workload. You shouldn't be reviewing and signing invoices for every job regardless of dollar amount. Nor should we require so much back up for small purchases that happen to be over $500. If you worry an employee isn't doing their due diligence in these regards they shouldn't be your employee. Your time is far too valuable to have to micromanage such sillyness.

I have been working at Nan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nan is a true mover and shaker in the Hawaii Construction Industry. They have become a major player over the past 5 years and are trying hard to move into other sectors of construction outside of the Army and Navy. Upper Management is working very hard to position the company as a premier builder in Hawaii

    Cons

The company's main experience is with the Army and Navy. They are not the go to contractor for the Hilton's, Marriott's, High End retailers, private sector. It's a hard transition into these areas, however, they are trying very hard to get work wherever it is available.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the hard work and keep charging ahead. Take pride in your human resources and make the work experience exceptional, the rewards from the individual employees to you will be abundant.
