I have been working at Nashville State Technical Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work; community like culture, still new in position but doubt that impression of the College will change.

    Cons

No negatives at this time; still new in position but doubt that impression of the College will change.

I have been working at Nashville State Technical Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Experience in teaching college-level students
New building / technology for social sciences
    Consistent pay raises (seniority based)

    Cons

Pay, even at highest adjunct level, is very poor.
    No job security
    Little input on class hours
Online classes are the dominant adjunct position; online classes are awful.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay for adjuncts, especially those with PhDs. More opportunity for full-time advancement.

I have been working at Nashville State Technical Community College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Faculty and support staff work hard and, for the most part, have each others' backs. The College is positioned to serve as an important partner in the continued growth and development of the Middle Tennessee community, should the administration decide to get on board. Community colleges change lives by providing the opportunity for upward economic mobility without the burden of significant student loan debt.

    Cons

The President seems more concerned with limiting his exposure for criticism than with creating a culture that fully supports student needs. Salaries are low. Funds to improve learning and enrichment opportunities for students are also low. Morale is, as you would expect, generally low.

    Advice to Management

    Retire.

I have been working at Nashville State Technical Community College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great colleagues, location, adequate benefits, mixture of students, some control over schedule

    Cons

Faculty have to wear too many hats which can affect teaching performance. No merit incentives. They have the lowest percentage of tenured faculty in the state. TN has some of the lowest pay scale of educators in the nation. NSCC pay scale is low compared to other colleges in State.

    Advice to Management

Faculty are credentialed professionals. Faculty morale will trickle down to student morale. Take care of your faculty and they will take care of you.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Nashville State Technical Community College (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Being able to teach a diverse population.

    Cons

No job security. Administration absolutely horrible. Students have a lot of power and you are not supported. Wanted to be full time but a lot of politics involved and if you are a male your chances are deminished.

    Advice to Management

Hire people who care and want to do an excellent job full time as I did. Reviews should be done by your peers. Many students are not prepared and need far more support. You appear to be interested in numbers because of reimbursement and not providing a quality education.

I worked at Nashville State Technical Community College full-time

    Pros

It takes next to nothing to get into the school as a student or as a administrator or faculty member. Lots of satellite campuses make it very accessible to students.

    Cons

This place is such a disappointment to the community. Most of the teachers are adjuncts, most of the adjuncts have only MA's or they are PHD students in the local universities. The administration is so sad. The president is someone to be avoided if you are female. Everyone else is just on a power trip. Be prepared to be "reallocated" so that certain "pets" can have your position.

    Advice to Management

Retire and give this school a chance to be great.

I have been working at Nashville State Technical Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I really enjoyed the rapport I have built with the faculty and students. The whole environment is warm and inviting to everyone.

    Cons

The compensation for this college is not that great. However, if you loving teaching the pay will not be your top priority in the first place.

    Advice to Management

Consider raising the pay for your adjunct professors. That way you may have less turn over and attract more teachers.
