I have been working at Nassau BOCES full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A lot of time off and you only work a 7.5 hours a day.

    Cons

No way to advance in the company. The civil service system does not allow the company to officially promote employees but it doesn't say anything about overtime. So if you want a "raise" you have to work many hours outside your assigned schedule. Often times BOCES will hire out from 3rd party companies to fill a role rather than promote or hire through civil service. Little to no training on industry standards currently being used.

    Advice to Management

Train your employees, give them goals to work toward, have a yearly reviews, be transparent as to department goals and activities.

I have been working at Nassau BOCES (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The students. BOCES offers you a chance to make a true difference in student's lives. There is an opportunity to be creative; as long as it doesn't cost any additional money. Relatively few triennials.

    Cons

Little to zero professional development. The culture is more about covering yourself /the agency in case of possible litigation or state review. Morale within my specific school, (especially among aides and teachers is poor).

    Advice to Management

Invest in professional development for your own staff, (don't use us to train the rest of the staff on staff development days).

    Cons

Severely flawed system, not all staff is trained properly or should be working with special ed. kids

    Pros

It is a great environment for the kids to learn and a fun environment to work in

    Cons

The administration was disorganized for the summer program. Many things were not addressed at the orientation.

I worked at Nassau BOCES full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Only pros are lateral colleagues. There is a sense of affinity with your work-mates-we all had to endure the same inept administration and nonsensical policies that worked to make viable programs obsolete.

    Cons

Tyrannical administration who largely operate unchecked. They pat one another on the back while teachers, custodians, clerical, aides and paras lose their jobs at an alarming rate. They make DUMB decisions that render these lay-offs all the while remaining fully employed. Never was there such a board in existence that did not care about the kids and staff as this one. Two years a survey went out and the results were misrepresented as we know that everyone is unhappy. The climate of staff is so bad it transcends to the kids!! NO ONE CARES.

    Advice to Management

Upper administration needs to be held accountable and not in that fake way they have been. TRUE oversight of these people.

I worked at Nassau BOCES full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Participation in New York State Pension Plan

    Cons

Senior managers spend their time stealing each others' resources; they could care less about helping students or providing a good education. I'm embarrassed to say I worked there.
