I have been working at National Cancer Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The National Cancer Institute sponsors the majority of Cancer Research.

As an Institute within the National Institutes of Health, you have unlimited access to a cutting edge science lectures.

It has working relationships with all of the major academic centers of excellence.

You are encouraged to continue to learn, and offer several certificate studies. They also have a fellows program and MPH program.

Good Job Security once you are there a couple years.
    Good Retirement process

    Cons

Pay is less than the Private Sector-- but is acceptable
Working around the inherent inefficiencies of Government can be frustrating.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at National Cancer Institute (More than a year)

    Pros

A noble mission, but way too many agenda, egos and squabbles. There are some amazing doctors and patient-focused people, but the communications operation is dysfunctional and broken.

    Cons

Low pay, no advancement nor raises (one percent in three years), and absolute anonymity as an employee of my contracting firm (Kelly Government Solutions). You are a line item and a number - that's it.

    Advice to Management

Stop worrying about your standing with the Director's office and start thinking about cancer patients.

    Pros

NCI was the best choice for my postdoctoral experience. There is huge different at the academic level with state university which I experienced. You will never meet parking issue, you can get the full payment for metro or bus if you do not drive.

    Cons

I almost had no downside with NCI, as NCI is so great place, really!! The only thing I can say perhaps you have no so much choice at the cafeteria.
