I have been working at National Grid USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salaries, benefits, company culture, people. Bonus structures are extremely rewarding and the company definitely tries hard to care about all employees no matter how small.

    Cons

Sometimes difficult to change the business in a positive way. Can be lots of red tape / challenges which can slow advancements down.

    Advice to Management

Trusting employees to do their job is crucial and sometimes lost by the union / management divide (mostly for good reason) but I find that if people respect and like you, they are more willing to go out of their way for you, especially in regards to union employees who have a very defined job description where it may be frowned upon to go above and beyond normal expectations.

I have been working at National Grid USA as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid holidays, great wage, good atmosphere to work in. Also, there are many senior guys around to learn from and have the patience to teach the younger guys.

    Cons

Can sometimes get boring in the summertime when people start taking days off. Interns do not get paid time off (except holidays) so if we take a day off, we dont get paid for it.

    Advice to Management

Hire more interns! There are too many old people nearing retirement and not enough young people learning the system.

I have been working at National Grid USA full-time

    Pros

Grid tries hard to improve, prepare for the future and be more like a modern corporation.

    Cons

A lot more change and turn over than the usual utility.
Integration of all the legacy companies has been very slow.

I worked at National Grid USA full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with . Common goals and accountability. Always treated me equitably and rewarded sustainable performance.

    Cons

For a short time between 2007 and 2011 there were multiple directions taking place and communication was difficult to manage at a mid manager level due to the changing environment. Once the organization was refocused, the goals seemed to be more aligned.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep the customer and shareholders a core business. The regulators will follow in hand.

I worked at National Grid USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great managers. Training was very informative and the trainer was very good . Your managers are always there for you and want you to succeed . Insurance benefits were great . Pay rate the best I have seen for call center agents.

    Cons

Very fast paced work environment Need to be prepared to dive right in when you get on the phones . Some days you will take 100 calls a day . Customers can be angry due to the nature of the Business but the company gives you a lot of tools to be able to handle every difficult situation that could arise .

    Advice to Management

Be bit more lenient with quality and assurance when it comes to call times so the agent is able to give all ther focus to the customer on the line . Once faced with time restraints all agents tend to get preoccupied with adherence instead of providing exceptional customer service . Extending call times a bit for the agent to fully engage with customer will give a better chance of a one call resolution, leading to less call backs and fewer angry customers.
