Pros
Good culture Dedicated leadership team Great location Loyal employer- If you work hard, you will be rewarded
Cons
No flex time but you can pick the shift you work (in most departments) Younger company- Prior comment that mentions growing pains is accurate. Company is striving to improve their compensation and benefits structure
Advice to Management
Keep listening to employee suggestions

"Decent place for a starting off point for recent college grads, but don't stay more than two years."

Doesn't RecommendNeutral OutlookNo opinion of CEOI worked at National Interstate full-time for more than 5 years
Pros
Lunch program, company outings, good place to gain some experience, non-manager employees are friendly and team players
Cons
No flex time, rarely able to work from home, inclement weather is not an excuse for being late, poor pay, poor merit increases, lack of promotions, not up to date on technology, doesn't purchase up to date software, constant micro-managing, poor benefits, positions are (on average) $10k less than industry standard, company is very biased to hourly employees (no career track opportunities), HR's primary concern is... planning parties, interoffice dating is encouraged

Create a more employee friendly working environment, pay employees the industry standard, be understanding that employee's have lives outside of NATL,

Pros
Easy access to the Richfild location. Most of the senior examiners are well-qualified, so their work product is good.
Cons
Management prefers yes-men for supervisory positions, and favoritism is obvious. Management is not open to new ideas. Incompetence is tolerated. Salary is based partially on seniority, which is obsolete. There is no technical claims training for claims adjusters with limited skills. There are too many managers. Too many managers review the same claim files. The claims manager has no relations with rank &... file. Vacation time is minimal for the industry. There is no flex time. The employer 401K contributuion is minimal, and you have to wait until the end of the year.

Great American Insurance is seeking to purchase NI's outstanding shares, and take over operations. Assist them. NI would benefit from Great American's insight and resources.

Doesn't RecommendNegative OutlookDisapproves of CEOI have been working at National Interstate full-time for more than 5 years
Pros
You learn a lot when other employees leave and you are reassigned their workload. Gaining of useful work experience. You can also learn a lot about how not to manage.
Cons
There is a lack of real management knowledge at the highest level. Groupthink is prevalent and is the only way to get ahead. If you have learned knowledge and attempt to offer it, you are shunned and sometimes fired due to intimidation by insecure management. I also experienced unethical business dealings with customers and employees. Management by fear and intimidation. Managers also openly admitted... disapproval of women and old folks in authoritative positions. Finally, pay not equitable amongst sexes, or for those with experiences, and benefits were old school (no flex time). Overall not a positive place or place for real growth.

Would suggest boardmembers position new players in management. Organization is rotten at head of state.
National Interstate2014-01-20"Great internship experience!!"
StarStarStarStarStarRecommendsPositive OutlookApproves of CEOI worked at National Interstate for less than a year
Pros
Can really make a meaningful impact as an intern. The opportunity to gain experience in many different areas.
Cons
With all the regulators insurance companies have to report to, there is much more work to be done then the average accounting job. No flex time.

I have been working at National Interstate
Pros
Family feeling setting but way behind the times
Cons
Terrible in thinking outside the box 8 to 5 no IF's ands or but's NO FLEX TIME. If you are late because of snow or traffic, you better use PTO time This company refuses to bend on flexible hours even for experienced salary employees Way behind on the times in trying to be automated They still use paper and their computer / technology is from the 1980"s
Advice to Management
FLEX TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't RecommendNeutral OutlookDisapproves of CEOI worked at National Interstate full-time for more than a year
Pros
Fellow employees are willing to help Location
Cons
Managment is more concerned with internal numbers then helping or backing up employees No training on insurance policies or procedures No flex time Hours are long and there is not compensation, perks or even thank you for extra hours Little to no direction from management, all help comes from fellow employees which is not always correct For size of company benefits are expensive, 401K is a joke at yearly... contribution

Good people are leaving due to management and lack of training. Focus on training current employees and not how many new hires are coming in every month. Update your benefits and outlook on flex time.
