I worked at National Kidney Foundation full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The newbies are trying to make change but the people that have been there for years prevent it. Started to see some change in process but stopped

    Cons

Horrible management, short staffed, expect you to do a job of four people with a low salary. Employees are not valued, not competitive in anyway. I stayed to long and glad I final left.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to let go of the people that have been there for over 10 years, move to the current century. Listen. Take responsibility, tell the truth

I worked at National Kidney Foundation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Getting to help people suffering from kidney disease and educating the public about their risk factors.

    Cons

1.) They are not transparent about the work schedule. It was labeled a 9-5 position, but there were many nights/weekends where I had to work or go to events. They don't pay overtime and instead call it "flex scheduling" which means they send you home to get rid of the OT. In my opinion, that's not reasonable to ask an employee to take time out of their normal hours without compensating them fairly.
2.) This organization has cliques - beware
3.) Poor training / onboarding process
4.) Lack of communication from headquarters down to each field office

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees better, treat them with respect, and compensate them fairly.

I worked at National Kidney Foundation full-time

    Pros

Kidney disease is on the rise. This needs to change.

    Cons

Terrible management. They go behind your back to get information without allowing any input. Makes decisions based on no data.

    Advice to Management

Need to change the CEO. Nice person, not qualified for the position.

Insecure employees, UNQUALIFIED leadership, individuals promoted that are not qualified for their roles immature staff. No using raised funds to serve community

    Advice to Management

hire leaders that are secure and qualified, don't just get warm bodies

    Cons

    Pros

Good location and felt like I was helping a greater good

    Cons

I felt misled the entire time since I started working for NKF. Some people are amazing that work there but others are extremely two-faced. In the end I think they wanted to save money and do more work with less people. Any feedback at all was always good, yet hardworking people were left in the dust in the end. I have a feeling I am not the first nor last. Really dishonest management.

    Advice to Management

BE HONEST, have team time, get to know each other on a personal level ever, give encouragement when deserved, let employees know if they are not meeting standards, start thinking like a trustful non-profit.

    Pros

Great opportunity to work closely with donors and recipients.

    Cons

Terrible training process with high expectations on outcome. No one knows how to complete task and leaves new hires in the dark.

    Advice to Management

Take time to actually know the roles you supervise so that you are able to offer skill enhancement advise.

    Pros

Location was pretty good I guess.

    Cons

This is specific to NKF Serving Greater New York.

The "orientation" process is a bunch of bull and once HR sends you to your respective department no one actually tells you how to do anything. The management structure is extremely disorganized and my "direct report" was never the one giving me projects or following up with me which was very confusing and was NOT made clear to me from the beginning. The people who I ended up working under did not know how to delegate or how to properly prepare me for what was expected of me which made a typical day there very frustrating. I was never included in meetings or discussions on projects that I was supposed to be helping with, I was only sent lists of tasks after the fact. I did not feel respected or even important to the overall success of the events and I was extremely uninspired to be working there. On top of that, this is not a full service organization and the mission is a little bit hazy. I'm still not sure exactly where the money goes or if any of the development staff care about people with kidney disease or just their own personal portfolios. If you want to work at an inspiring, mission driven, inclusive, impactful organization, where you know exactly what you get up in the morning to go to work for, DO NOT work at NKF.

    Advice to Management

Invest way more time into your support staff
