I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Decent starting pay and benefits

    Cons

Few if any raises and lots of hours. Paperwork became more important, implied and expressly, than both customers and safety.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Not many to share, met some great friends along the way.

    Cons

Management is horrible. (M.D. TOTCO). The field techs are run like junk iron, and treated about as well. Customers are allowed to walk all over the management and employees. No organization. Inventory and assets are only given to stores after they beg for them. To much back scratching between managers and buddies. No pay raises in 3.5 years. No advancement in 11.5 years (Not like I haven't applied or given my time to the company.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great team of techs to work with, lots of Vets. Ability to make a lot of money if you want to work a lot of hours. Supervisors and Managers were easy to work with, if you work hard and do what you're told, they are very willing to work with you on things like vacation, time off, and emergencies when they come up.

    Cons

On call work is tough, especially if you want to plan time with the family, if you are single and just want to make a lot of money, this is the job for you. Not too much training to be had, hopefully with the upturn in oil, more training opportunities will come up, but luckily the other techs are great about helping you out when you need it, and the supervisors are very helpful as well.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This is generally a good place to work. Most of the bosses are good and the benefits are good as well.

    Cons

For technicians the schedule is usually non-existent. When they say "100% travel" they take that seriously. Pay is competitive for field technicians but not for a rig ET. Engineering support is usually nonexistent as well as they would rather techs come from Norway.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to gain additional training. Can transfer to other divisions throughout the company and travel anywhere if you are willing to.

    Cons

Management could use improvement. There really isn't a set schedule, most good paying technician jobs are all 24/7 on call.
