    Pros

Able to move easily within the company to grow your career and move up. Plenty of opportunities for growth.

    Cons

Average pay is very low and no pay increases for past 2 years with promotions. Keep bad management on staff that pushes or forces good employees to quit.

    Advice to Management

You should grow and train your staff that wants to succeed and entice them to stay versus under paying them and they leave on their own.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very little institutional control. Corporate lets the business units operate like the wild, wild west. Some managers take good care of their people. Others do not. This can afford you a great deal of freedom to run your group how you want.

    Cons

The company is moving into the "big time." Benefits used to be outstanding, but are now regressing to the industry average... which is their goal. Solid management teams are getting thinned out. NOV is about who you know, not what you've done or know. Those with the golden capes will continue to rise through the ranks irregardless of performance.

Little to no cross divisional opportunities. NOV is 100% aligned with the promote from within... so much so you can only get promoted from within your business unit. Make sure you choose wisely.

NOV always has, and always will be, at the bottom of the pay scale.

    Advice to Management

The way you handle layoffs is detrimental to long term success. Doing them in secret and in a vacuum bleeds talent. Layoffs need to be more centrally managed, more transparent to both the management teams and the employees. Just showing up one day and being gone the next is not the best way to retain talent.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time

    Pros

room for moving up, lots of opportunites

    Cons

some management sucks, too much politics, friendship. if you are not protected or have a buddy manager, you won't go too far. if your manger is an expat and you are from the geographical area/ country he/ she is you are screwed, not going anywhere. Nationals from the UK/ Europe are taking more and more higher influential positions and these people are making wrong biased decisions to favor their own nationals against US citizens and other nationals. if you are not from the same country your manager is, go find a job somehwere,

    Advice to Management

message to executives and corporate leadership: review decisions made by group, department. see citizenships of those fired or laid, who stayed/ retained their jobs.
