I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, good people, a nice work environment

    Cons

Downturn in the oil industry made positions very unstable, many cutbacks on nice things like cofee and annual bonuses removed. Should improve in the near future.

    Advice to Management

My management was very hands off, which I don't mind. Some better project strategy would be helpful.

    Pros

    -Innovation- Driven Engineering
    - Strong synergy between Engineering development groups
    - Strong synergy between Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing, Sales and Executive Management
    - Excellent opportunities to stretch your wings and advance beyond your current position
    - Very generous pay and bonus opportunities when you are willing to put in effort for the company
    - Excellent opportunities to travel the world

    Cons

    - Standard roller-coaster oilfield pace:
        - if you are prepared mentally for it, it's a fantastically great place to ride the "up and over the tops" as well as the "down and bottoms"
        - i.e., NOT for the timid engineer

    Advice to Management

Keep on keeping on! I had a great time. Thanks for the ride.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The management are approachable and concerned for their employees. My division doesn't like cube farms but individual offices (which I love).

    Cons

Salaries have been stuck for a couple of years and there is often no clear career path. I guess it is a problem with the oil & gas industry.

    Advice to Management

Look at diversifying into other fields.
