I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This is generally a good place to work. Most of the bosses are good and the benefits are good as well.

    Cons

For technicians the schedule is usually non-existent. When they say "100% travel" they take that seriously. Pay is competitive for field technicians but not for a rig ET. Engineering support is usually nonexistent as well as they would rather techs come from Norway.

I worked at National Oilwell Varco (More than 5 years)

    Pros

NOV has a very large market share in the Oilfield. They have production facilities all around the world.

    Cons

NOV was originally a very good company to work for. Unfortunately with the down turn the focus on getting quality data change to looking for good data. When your backlog decreases as much as as NOV's did in the past couple year good data is hard to come by.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Positive Outlook

I worked at National Oilwell Varco as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Work was pretty relaxed, I enjoyed working with everyone in the office, I became friends with everyone over the summer. Good name for your resume, good place to start a career then move somewhere else. Massive company, well known.

    Cons

Pretty apathetic environment, one of the lower paying companies in this field. It's a well known company but for some reason doesn't carry the same respect as many of it's smaller competitors. Doesn't do much to attract good talent.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more and work on investing in them. People want to do good work but it seems a lot of times they aren't trusted by management for any sizeable project

    Pros

The training that NOV offers is second to none. The ability to grow your career in one company is great.

    Cons

The oil industry has ups and downs therefore it is a very volatile career.

    Advice to Management

Keep training and keep promoting the family atmosphere.
