I worked at National Railway Equipment Co. (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Family Friendly. One if the Best CEO's I ever meant.

    Cons

The Politics and Brown nosing. Promoted the wrong people. The wrong people were let go. They eventually fired that Vice President, but the damage was already done.

    Advice to Management

You should of went what felt right. Not promoting the Brown Nosers. You will pay for it in the long run. It will take you a while to recipe from this. Trusted the wrong person this time.

I worked at National Railway Equipment Co. (Less than a year)

    Pros

I received great guidance from the General Counsel attorney at the time and was able to acquire great knowledge in leasing and contract law.

    Cons

The company seemed really disorganized and there was a real lack of communication, which made it harder to perform some of my tasks.

    Pros

Good small family owned operation. Working in an "office" position made you feel as if you mattered vs some bigger companies that don't present such opportunities. Also was able to learn various task because of lack of resources.

    Cons

Management at least from Engineering side was awful. Extremely unprofessional, countless opportunities given to some that just don't deserve it over and over again. No viable structure was ever set in place. A lot over here and then over there type of work. No project ever seemed to get 100% done. The amount of money wasted on rework and revisions from a quality stand point would boggle ones mind.

    Advice to Management

Mr. Beal could save ton just finding a real quality engineer that know hows to implement real processes with cause and effect analysis that would increase output as well as make for a much more efficient production. This would also eliminate the riff raff that constantly make mistakes over and over again with no real punishment. At the end of the day it's my belief that it doesn't matter how long joe smo has worked for you that makes them a good employee. It's understanding that you may have better talent among you that deserve to be compensated and rewarded. Also coming from an employee that was there more than 3 years if your handbook says after 90 days you give evaluations, it'd be a good idea to follow that policy. I know of several that never received an evaluation / pay increase opportunity until they had sought other employment else ware.

  5. "No management at ANY level. It's all about sucking up and lying."

I worked at National Railway Equipment Co. full-time

    Pros

It is a small company and family owned, so the work atmosphere is one where the employees may be hired for one position, but they end up doing many functions. This is a good place to learn all aspects and areas of responsibility.

    Cons

Although there are people with management titles, the CEO bowed down to whoever is the bigger liar, so people are fearful of losing their jobs. Consequently, management is more concerned about protecting their jobs than their employees.

    Advice to Management

Get to know what each employee really does and make decisions based on their abilities, not based on the suck-ups who lies about their accomplishments.

    Pros

There just isn't a lot of pros to give for the Mt Vernon,IL plant, except if your buddy buddy, know someone high up in the plant, or a suck up with senior management, your job is safe.

    Cons

There are lots of cons, poor work conditions (surprised OSHA has not shut them down or investigated them), wages are substandard when compared to similar tasks at other companies, the Union is a complete joke and does not stand behind the workers, disrespectful supervisors towards employees causes morale to drop.

    Advice to Management

Clean house by getting rid of the Plant Superintendent, Dir of Maint and Safety, and Head of Security, those 3 need to be let go, they are everything that is wrong with the plant.

    Pros

Meet different people and getting along with your co-workers. Learn a lot of new things about the railroad company and what they do to fix the locomotives.

    Cons

Not a warm enviroment weather wise and a very old run down building that needs a lot of things repaired (roof, bathrooms, etc). Very noisy at times and dirty.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend that upper management do employee reviews a least once a year for their pay raises, etc. It would be helpful and find out what employee needs to work on more.

    Pros

Good benefits, very driven team, can get good bonus based on good performance and leads, recommend people to try and get the feeling about it

    Cons

can work extra hours in order to achieve goals, sometimes start early and finish late, but after all, it based on your capability.

    Pros

Good benefits, some good people in middle management, fantastic product.

    Cons

Work is rushed through. Sales is #1, engineering and production never have the time they need to do the job right, and quality is bypassed whenever possible. Since Lawrence died, the company has been at the mercy of a young, inexperienced heir who is both arrogant in his abilities and at the same time lacking in them. He is easily intimidated by competent people, and easily swayed by yes-men.
