    Pros

It's a job if your desperate. You will learn to do a lot with little or no resources to help you. In most cases you work with good people.

    Cons

The corporate attitude is "give me all you have, but don't ask for anything in return. No raises, or bonus. To this company you are only worth what it will cost to replace you. They seem to take pride in holding people back. Occasionally a good District Manager will emerge for a short time but they are powerless to make a real difference and the good ones don't last long. If you are in management don't waste your time on new ideas, their not interested, and plan to be micro managed by the corporate office.

    Advice to Management

It's probably too late to salvage this company, but you could start by listening to the people who take care of your customers at store level.

I worked at National Stores Inc. full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Had a pretty good Loss prevention program until they laid all of them off. Good luck with shrink next year.

    Cons

Operations is a joke. They hire executives from successful retailers then they either quit or get fired when they realize the CEO is never going to allow change for the better and really doesn't want to hear the truth on how badly he runs the company. He wants the results with out putting in the effort. They can't even get the Receiving process right. Stores will get an email at 7pm the night before that they have a truck the next morning at 4am. Then they wonder way payroll is out of control. Not to mention paying out all these executives that only last a month or two. I'm sure that's not to budget friendly. The executives that have lasted only do so because they know how to make the CEO feel warm and fuzzy when in fact they don't accomplish anything except racking up expenses by being on the road so long that their company cars get towed from the airport.

    Advice to Management

Don't change a thing. Best of luck.

I have been working at National Stores Inc. full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good base pay, low cost clothing, merchandising freedom . Allowed to hire staff without approval to slow down process.

    Cons

No payroll to run store, no reviews , no raises , un realistic goals, open 365, overloaded trucks with no plan. Company will keep on shipping with no regard to store size or volume.

    Advice to Management

If things dont change u will never survive. Cant run things how u did 10 yrs ago. I used more payroll in a little gap.

I have been working at National Stores Inc. (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Company seems to be financially stable, although since it is privately owned there are no public disclosures. Company also is growing, as they have recently expanded to the east coast and Puerto Rico through acquisition.

    Cons

Like all companies, they preach customer service, although in reality they don't provide their employees the tools to execute these directions. This company is oppressive in their treatment of their employees. They don't offer raises to employees unless they are promoted, which is rare. Most managers are hired from outside the company, and whatever you are hired as, position and salary, is where you will stay. annual performance appraisals, which in reality are not annual, are used to determine continued employment instead of pay increases. In the past year the quality of merchandise seems to have slightly declining, which has caused a sales slump, and decreased payroll to work with. The cause of this could be from not enough resources to cover expansion, but this is just my own speculation.

    Advice to Management

Promote more from within your own ranks, so that you can develop a culture and build on it. When you are always bringing in new people from a multitude of different organizations it stifles cohesion in your organization. Also I would suggest that you use the envision monitoring that you do constantly to observe employees to look for employees doing thing right, and going above and beyond, and provide recognition to these employees, instead of only looking for negatives and issuing threats. This would create a major boost in employee morale and promote a higher level of productivity.

    Pros

Good pay , great benefits and strong loss prevention department .

    Cons

Make sure to have every thing in writting before you startvworking with the nationals . They can agree to crrtain things in the deal then after starting they change days off or force you to work 6 or even 7 days with no extra pay or a promise to give you back as a comp day .
Long hours , the deal is 9am to 6pm but you end working unyil 9 , 10 or even 11pm and some times overnight shift . Also if you have a day off you still have to do and finish alot of reports . Simply you haven no day off and youvarr working 24/7.

    Advice to Management

Be clear to ask and have every thing in writting before you start working with the Nationals .
