I have been working at Nationwide Financial full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Clean and comfortable work place. Generally pleasant coworkers.

    Cons

"Attitude" is valued and rewarded in place of actual skill and experience (as in the willingness to check your brain at the door and pretend to enthusiastically support existing priorities/policies regardless of how flawed and ineffective they may be). A spirit of innovation is generally received as a threat to the status quo, not as an asset.

    Advice to Management

Solicit ideas from your workers who most closely interact with the customer - then listen to and implement (at least some of) them! These are the employees who frequently best have their fingers on the pulse of what customers need and want.

    Cons

Management favors and hires from other specific manager, not always the most qualified.

    Advice to Management

Managers need to staff appropriately and care more about everyone development and progress, not selected ones.

I worked at Nationwide Financial as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Quality company with whom to do business. Relationship with insurance agencies and staff was rewarding. Award trips and incentives.

    Cons

Agents have no obligation to refer business to you. Some agents cherry pick leads, leaving you scraps. Other agents will establish a sales relationship with you as a means to please management. Meanwhile, they may never refer business your way. Commissions were not always at street level.

    Advice to Management

District Management need to supervise relationship between EFSS and Agent. They must be held accountable for agencies who participate in program, but offer few, if any, referrals to EFSS. Also, company must bundle commissions produced at all agencies to determine compensation tiers.

I have been working at Nationwide Financial as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - great entry level job
    - relatively easy
    - good work/life balance

    Cons

    - HORRIBLIY UNDERPAID
    - growth is slow
    - retention is bad

    Advice to Management

Please pay more if you expect your contract workers to stay as employees. Retention is bad for both contract and associates and it is largely due to bad pay. If you expect these employees to be licensed professionals, you need to pay them like such.

I worked at Nationwide Financial full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Worked at company for almost 10 years. Very stable employment. Roughly half of the employees has been at the company for >10 years. Good culture, transparency from executive leadership, lots of opportunity for promotion or internal transfers to further career growth. Offers tons of vacation time that scale with length of tenure.

    Cons

Almost impossible to get fired or laid off, so a lot of people clock in, sit at their desk, and wait to clock out. It's frustrating to the high-performers. Slow pace of change, lots of bureaucracy. Outdated technology. Compensation seemed to be below average for most roles.

    Advice to Management

Clean out the ranks, offer more competitive pay and bring in some higher performers to start seeing results.
