Used to be great , not anymore.

Big corporation with some excellent benefits with a bank right inside campus if you are at the home office. If you enjoy working for a fortune 500 company with lots of bueracratic processes, you might like it here. There are a lot of different software applications and processes that you could learn if you are coming from a smaller shop. They also tried implementing six sigma , which failed. There are some departments that are better than others, but your experience will mainly depend on who you end up working for. Most importantly , it depends on what stage of career you are in. If you are looking for something non-aggressive government type work , this might be the aplce for you.
Cons
Growth opportunities are not merit based. Veteran employees have formed a clique and all promotions happen based on that only.

Excellent opportunity with good benefits

Employees are encouraged to continue to grow and develop skills that will help not only with their current position but with their life-long career as well. Excellent benefits with a real focus on better health for the employees and their families. Work from home opportunities and advancement opportunities are decent.
Cons
There is a small window when you first begin employment to show management you are truly a hard-worker and worthy of advancement opportunities. Mediocre will keep your job but stop your professional growth completely.

Continues to head downhill fast!

The benefits and rates charged to employees are the only pro of working at Nationwide. While these are far from outstanding and need a lot of work they are still a pro. I really wish Nationwide was 'on the side' of their employees.
Cons
Biggest opportunity is in leadership - promotions are based on who you know, who gives out gifts to others - favoritism all over the place. People are not promoted for what they know or have done in their careers. Just take a look of those leaders on LinkedIn who are former nationwide leaders - they left for a reason versus being asked to leave....many great leaders left because they saw the writing on the wall. Politics and favoritism run throughout the organization even within HR, very disappointing to someone who is leading and truly cares about people. If you care about people and trying to make a difference this is not the place for you. Comp is not good compared to other companies just look around. If you want to work on cool, innovative work they you should skip Nationwide - very, very corporate and old school - not in a cool, hip way either. And really NW - get into the 90's at least - the same employee dress code has been in place in from the 1980's. People want to come as they are - they are adults, treat them this way and catch up with the "good" and "great" cultures of other companies.

In general, the people who work for the company are great people- fun and caring. Pay is decent.
Cons
Total benefit package is not great and getting worse as the company further cuts the health insurance options it provides its employees. Morale is very low company-wide; the company is consolidating some functions resulting in lost jobs in certain areas. Bureaucracy is ingrained in the corporate culture. Many levels of management means even the smallest changes don't get completed. The computer system the employees use is ancient (DOS-based).

Pros
they say they promote work-life balance you can get away with doing nothing and not get fired - if that is what you are looking for they encourage everyone to 'self-manage' - read: you are on your own
Cons
difficult to move up - you MUST make alliances with management parking - 5 year wait for FTE's for company garages so you pay $150/month and walk long distances lower than avg pay and increases are 2-3% they move bad associates to other teams rather than addressing bad behaviors health benefits are expensive and not great

Tenured employee saddened by changes - not for the better
Aug 22, 2013 - Claims Specialist in Cleveland, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
We have an exceptional manager who has a total open door policy; decent benefits and salary/recognition.
Cons
Redundency. We've seen changes in claims AVPs routinely every several years. Each time they bring changes that tend to make the process more complicated for no need. There are essentially 'too many chiefs" depending on their loyal subordinates to maintain status quo.

This is your dream employer! If you just want to be very average.

Benefits are great and very little is actually expected of you in term of actual performance.
Cons
Upward mobility is very difficult if you are not of an "uncommon demographic." No other way to say it.

Great potential, but management really got away from the corporate values

-Very good benefits (they match 50% of your 401k up to 6% and also have an employer funded pension). Health/Dental/Vision options are good as well. -Work/life balance is really good. Managers are flexible with doctor appointments, family emergencies, etc. -PTO is accrued, which is a great benefit for people who do not get sick or have a lot of unscheduled absences. 18.5 days off to start and after 5 + years that increases to 23.5 days. -Opportunity to work CAT duty during storms or heavy claim periods, which gives you a chance to make extra money. -They do a good job of focusing on employee engagement by planning special events and activities. -Very strong training across the board. Both internally and externally, this is an organizational strength. Felt like I was given the knowledge and tools to do my job well. -A lot of really good people work there. Formed a lot of great relationships. -Really good teamwork overall within the office. There were plenty of people who would pass the buck and take the easy way out, but for the most part the entire office worked together really well. Felt like you could ask others for help or if you had questions. -Job security is great. People will always be getting into accidents and having claims, so as long as you are doing your job to an adequate level, there isn't much threat of losing your job.
Cons
-Difficult to move up within claims organization and in general. Even getting promoted to the next title within your department is an uphill battle. Even with very good results, it takes entirely too long. A lot of people would move companies to simply get a raise. As a result, we would lose a lot of good employees and it would require everyone else to take on extra work to pick up the slack. -Very clear that upper management plays favorites. Saw people who did not deserve promotions, consistently moving up. -End of year performance evaluations are completely unfair and borderline unethical. Mentality within upper management almost seems like they are trying to keep people down and in their current roles. If you have over 80 employees, someone in the department has to be a 5 (on a scale of 1-5). When this scale was established I was not aware of any 5's and very few 4's over the course of several years. Everyone seemed to fall into the 2 to 3 category, outside of a few people who got a 4 and then the very bottom performers who would be a 1. -Pay is OK. If you want to be paid more, you have to actively seek it out (meaning getting another job offer and asking them to match or putting pressure on them to leave). -Not much opportunity to work from home outside of during snow storms or adverse weather. This job can easily be done from home and they could probably create a more loyal workforce by being flexible and giving people the autonomy to work from home occasionally. -They are very customer focused, which is obviously a good thing. However, they would only take 1 or 2 surveys a month from hundreds of customers that you might interact with. So it was pretty much luck of the draw when it came to your customer service scores. This was a large part of performance reviews and for a lot of people it was pretty unfair. On a scale from 1-10, you needed to be at a 9 or higher to really have any chance to get a better raise, promotion, good review, etc. And most of these surveys are on people that were injured by a Nationwide insured. As a result, it can be difficult to get good scores. Metrics are a bit skewed and used against you when they want to and then not really used in your favor when they are strong.

The job is not worth the pay
May 16, 2022 - Claims Service Representative in San Antonio, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
You definitely meet some great people and they have decent benefits with lots of time off and even overtime opportunities
Cons
The training is rushed, they expect way too much out of you with minimal knowledge. You get 0.0002 seconds between calls and cant even take a quick drink or bathroom break. You get yelled at for things you cant control and you're forced to lie to members to make the company look better. if you value your mental health i would avoid any call center
