A Great Place to Work
Oct 6, 2021 - Manager, Process Management in Columbus, OHRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Open lines of communications from top down; hyper-focus on development and providing tools/resources to continue to grow; great people
Cons
Salaries may not be as competitive but the great culture and flexibility makes up the difference

Pros
Culture is undeniably affected by the historical roots of the company when it started as a small insurer to farmers. It is a somewhat laid back atmosphere but focused on doing what's best for the company and the members (customers).
Cons
The laid back culture comes at a price and in the form of smaller salaries compared to other companies.

Rework strategy; chip away at culture of entitlement

Work life balance. There are good people to work for, you just have to search them out.
Cons
Hierarchal culture; incredibly poor systems; undifferentiated product that has the reputation for being expensive; poor marketing strategy and efficacy

Nationwide, just an OK place to work.

Decent benefits, fairly steady and reliable employer. Mostly fair treatment as long as you go along with the program. Good vacation benefit once you've been there awhile (and you don't get sick and have to use it up!). Average office environment, but late in realizing that offices need upgrading. Facilities outside and the grounds and public areas of the buildings are nice and a source of pride, but they take better care of them than they do the inside working environment of the office. Health facility, bank, fitness room, library, company store are on site. Multiple clubs and organizations to join. The people... decent, hard working, good people work here.
Cons
Big company, easy to get lost in the maze. Typical large company culture... you are a mere cog in the machine instead of a valued person. Poorly trained managers, as in NO training for them to learn how to manage people as people (vs. them being just a 'head count'.) They also need to pay more attention to their own work/life balance. Good loyal employees are often screwed over for no reason by clueless management. Managers are largely inflexible. Your manager may not be on site therefore they have no clue about your situation. Pay is below standard for many jobs. Older employees are targeted for layoff too frequently. Inflexible work rules. Too traditional of a work environment, example: working from home is frowned upon unless your manager is a bit of a maverick. Technologically backward processing systems that are frustrating and hard to work with. Personal technology like printers, PCs, monitors, etc. not kept up to date but only replaced if it breaks or reaches a point in the schedule for it to be replaced. Software is not updated at all unless you fight for it. Some access to the internet is blocked, sometimes for no good reason. CEO and top execs are poor examples (i.e., recent stock option cash-in when NW Mutual reacquired NW Financial and the company overall is not doing well). They are removed from the people actually doing the work and appear to have little clue to the concerns of the average worker.

The culture is phenomenal and there is a true focus on protecting what matters most to our members. The pay is competitive and the perks are many.
Cons
Nationwide is a big ship to turn and with quick changes in the industry, Nationwide is struggling to find the right strategy.

Life balance and career growth
Jan 6, 2015 - Manager, Human Resources in Columbus, OHRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Nationwide brings a very employee based culture to Columbus Ohio and the other locations they have offices - Des Moines, San Antonio, Sacramento, Scottsdale, Harleysville, and Raleigh. The company is very flexible so their associates are able to balance work and life priorities, while taking the time off they need to recharge. Also, development and career growth are ample here at Nationwide. I've doubled my starting salary in only 5 years and have a path ahead of me that can take me in any direction I choose. If you work hard during your time at work, you will be rewarded.
Cons
The internal politics when moving up past a G band position are extreme - so that is a choice one must make - do they want to play the politics and move up into Director and above level positions.

Do not let the cute commercials fool you!

- Good benefits - Nice campus in Columbus and Des Moines
Cons
- Spiteful environment - Management does not encourage growth or employees who seek to understand all aspects of the job - There is a clique culture. Where if you're not a part of a certain clique, you will not advance. - Some management lack experience. People get promoted based on who they know. - Vindictive and retaliatory culture - Compensation was low compared to same position at other companies

Create your own opportunities
Jan 25, 2016 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
This is a very large Fortune 100 company that prides themselves on culture and how they treat their associates & customers. There are a lot of genuinely good people that work here that want to help you succeed. The pay is about average, but considering the benefits (including a pension) it's not that bad. At the end of the day, your path is up to you. There are so many opportunities to move around departments and/or the country. Just be advised that you will find more opportunities in Columbus, OH or Des Moines, IA where the corporate offices are located. If you're good at networking and not afraid to ask questions, there are really no limits on what you can achieve. Plenty of people are willing to mentor. With that being said, it's up to you and you alone to define what you want and then go and get it.
Cons
If you're not in Columbus, opportunities and resources can be extremely limited. A bad performance review can diminish your opportunities for advancement. You oftentimes get notes from management that seem to be focused on perception rather than results or efficiency. Be mindful of politics, but that's to be expected at a corporation of this size. Also, the archaic IT systems can prevent one from being competitive in the modern workforce. I believe the IT infrastructure is so large and complex that it's too difficult and expensive to keep up with the times. I have used software from the 1980s that really shouldn't exist anymore. The medical plan is one of the worst plans I've ever seen. You pay a high premium AND high deductible. They tried to justify it by referencing the changes in healthcare legislation. Nationwide's medical plan is not good at all compared to other companies who offer generous employer sponsored medical plans.

Great company to grow with!
Jan 23, 2015 - Marketing Consultant in Columbus, OHRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Many marketing opportunities, rewarded for skills, and excellent team. I was there for 5 years and as I move through my life and my career, I realize it was one of the best experiences that helped to shape me as a marketer. Benefits are decent, better than others I have worked for.
Cons
You have to be your own advocate for growth, but opportunities are definitely there. Office culture is professional and fun. I made some friends for a lifetime there.
