    Don't bank on retirement here.

    Pros

Work atmosphere is great. The people you work with are nice. Onsite gym and cafeteria.

    Cons

Turnover rate isn't great. Plus the layoffs year after year seem to be more of a reoccurring theme than a temporary restructuring. Layoffs are the norm and the fear of being next makes for a stressful environment. I wouldn't work here if your looking to retire with a company. It's a place to build your resume not stay.

    Confusion in change

    Pros

Great people. Great response to COVID. Shortly after announcing a work arrangement plan that raised a lot of questions and concerns, leadership listened and pivoted to a plan where almost the entire company worked from home with limited workflow interruption. The company seems to truly care about its nonprofit and social justice initiatives, both within the organization and outside of it.

    Cons

Frequent system issues that impacted one's ability to do their job – slowness, strange glitches, or outages. Comments and expectations from upper leadership seemed to indicate a lack of understanding of technology issues and limitations. A sense of instability. I accepted a role with Nationwide because I'd heard great things from friends who worked there about development and growth. I had five supervisors in the span of two years in one position, which made mentorship a challenge. Layoffs had been announced in other departments shortly after I was hired, and they felt like a very real possibility throughout my own tenure. My own department was gathered for a layoff announcement a little over a year after my start date. A number of employees left, and then layoffs were then indefinitely postponed. The lack of manpower meant mandatory overtime coupled with the knowledge that layoffs were coming, but not being sure when they'd happen. (Layoff notices were officially sent nearly a year after the initial announcement.) I'm grateful that the layoff delay meant I had the chance to remain employed during the pandemic – and to be able to work from home too. But the ambiguity of the situation combined with mandatory overtime and the stress of the pandemic itself made a stressful situation even more stressful.

    Pros

Benefits are fair although the Health Insurance has very high deductibles , education benefits are generous

    Cons

Constant changes with lack of strategic planning. Rolling layoffs are constant without any planning for the workload left on the remaining associates. Lack of clear direction

Leaders don't really lead, still a passive-aggressive culture

Dec 24, 2009 - Senior Consultant in Columbus, OH

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Over the years, people who work here are generally a great bunch. It's the best reason to work here.

    Cons

New CEO installed without any reason from the Board; seems like the company has regressed to a more conservative approach. Leadership positions seem to be filled with Allied Insurance people or new people from outside the business. New senior alignment has confused everyone. Doesn't say much for promoting from within Nationwide. Seems like a slow death by a thousand cuts with layoffs in small numbers over the last couple of years. Constant pressure to do more with less; forced ranking of employees regardless of performance to weed people out. Benefits continue to take hits on a regular basis. HR leader seems to play favorites. Focus on improving experiences for customers has ignored feelings of or support from employees.

    Pros

Associate supportive upper leadership that cares about their associates. Advocates work life balance

    Cons

Constant push to move to the next level even when you are in the position you wanted to achieve. Doesn’t seem like a negative but can cause a great deal of stress or pressure on those who are not like minded. Annual org changes and layoffs. Creates insecurity in your job stability.

Best off in Columbus, at risk anywhere else.

    Pros

Pay is strong. Benefits are good. Generally good people work there.

    Cons

Over the last 10 years it seems layoffs have been the number one way of solving any problem. The challenge with that is that the people we let go are always the front line workers. The 'top of the house' always keeps their jobs, and new jobs are created for them when leadership wants them moved vs letting them go. This results in a new VP of something who then builds up a completely new department. I was fortunate enough to work in Columbus. The home office had no problem getting bigger, when cuts needed to be made it usually affected the field - the actual folks selling and managing the products.

    Pros

-Good compensation and benefits packages. -Online training resources available. -Good amenities at the downtown and Grandview campuses.

    Cons

-Layoffs are now common and executed without understanding of the capabilities and contributions of the people being terminated. -If you aren't part of a high visibility project, you have limited value in the eyes of management. -Company is obsessed with project management trends / jargon regardless of actual real world value.
