I have been working at Native American Health Center (More than a year)

    Pros

Great cultural focus, great patient centered care and holistic approach to health.

    Cons

Difficult infrastructure/tech systems, mid to lower management is average or below, and there are lots of stagnant/malignant workers.

  5. "Very large Native nonprofit"

    Star Star Star Star Star

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

There is an excellent mission and we all care about the community, and strive to improve the lives of clients. As far as nonprofits go, it is similar in benefits (full health coverage, very low charge to add family, retirement matching, many paid holidays) but doesn't stand out much, just average for a nonprofit.

    Cons

There is definitely some tension between native and nonnative staff. The communication across departments is not very good. Also, getting action from general administration is not easy, particularly HR and Accounting are not focused on providing very good service to staff. They are very slow to respond and seem to have some internal issues that are effecting the rest of us.

    Advice to Management

Improve administration of the agency and hold the general admin to the same high standard as the rest of the company.

I worked at Native American Health Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The mission at NAHC is strong and community engagement and trust is high. The work done by NAHC has a meaningful social impact. The historical significance of NAHC in the Native community is prominent and work achieved here is recognized and seen nationally and internationally as a leader in Native health services.

    Cons

NAHC struggles from inefficient processes and management. Implementing new systems, receiving clear direction and communication from leadership, and making improvements are all uphill battles. In my time I saw many passionate, creative, and energetic staff/community members leave frustrated, jaded, or disheartened by the lack of support and response by leadership.

    Advice to Management

Continue to evaluate processes, acknowledge and reward valuable and successful staff, implement achievement measures (annual evals based on goals, success, improvements needed), reduce bottlenecking of decisions and approvals.

I worked at Native American Health Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work with American Indian and low income patients to deliver health care and needed support services.

    Cons

CEO hires his family members for positions that are supported by federal funding; corruption is evident. Think twice before going into this toxic environment for employment.

    Advice to Management

Need overhaul of organization starting at the top. Get effective and educated board of directors to move organization forward.

I have been working at Native American Health Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

A handful of staff members who are caring and hardworking. Fairly good benefits.

    Cons

Dental -- horrible and numerous patient complaints of poorly done dental work
Medical -- patient problems not addressed in a timely and professional manner, poor follow up of patients, not enough time allotted for each patient to be seen properly and their problems addressed
Overall -- poor telephonic system, no one can get through, numerous complaints. Favoritism and racism evident especially in Senior management. Nepotism evident. No room for advancement unless you're Native. Lack of follow through. Some great ideas but mostly all talk and no action. Indecisiveness and clinical suggestions denied by non-clinical upper management. Ineffective managers with no clinical skills -- evaluations not done in a timely manner, bad employees retained because of fear of confrontation. HR unresponsive and payroll unresponsive. Horrible on-boarding process. Lack of communication throughout the agency. No benefits for advancement of education. Unsafe environment with no parking spaces available. Offers help but do not actually mean it -- refusing to help when staff reaches out. No compensation for cost of living change. Ineffective union representatives.

    Advice to Management

Treat each worker the same way whether they are the housekeeper or the doctor. Need to invest in training staff appropriately. Advancement opportunities for non-Native staff. Stop micromanaging employees. Stop favoring certain departments over others. Need to communicate effectively. Offer help when you're actually willing to help. Listen to the clinical staff when you have no clinical background.

I worked at Native American Health Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They're union. You may find a good person or two who actually care for the community and the true mission of the clinic.

    Cons

Non-competitive salary, absolute minimum pay in the industry. Clinic is in a high crime rate area, no staff parking, very little public parking, mostly metered, no security. Nepotism is rampant. Micro-management. Favoritism is obvious, seniority is useless. Policies not applied fairly. Policy is unclear and they make access to the policies and procedures manual difficult. Information not shared across departments. Extremely high staff turnover. Constant payroll issues and errors, not being paid properly or on time is common. Poor staff training. No regard for seniority. Employees are given no respect as a human being. A lot of company and community politics, inside turmoil, problems amongst staff, total toxic environment. Entire staff is voiceless.

    Advice to Management

Humble yourselves. Listen openly and honestly to what people have to say, positive and negative. The mission of the center would be attainable if the employees were able to focus on the community and not the toxic internal politics of the company. Let people who want to help, help. Don't allow people to be terminated because you or someone else just doesn't like them. Pay living wages.
