I worked at Natural Balance Pet Food (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours were flexible, manager was great and pay was very good for a merchandising position

    Cons

Predominantly weekend work even though week days are often a better opportunity to introduce the public to the brand or talk about pet nutrition

I worked at Natural Balance Pet Food full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great group of people. The entire team is professional and dedicated to getting work done and helping each other as much as possible.

    Cons

The company was acquired twice in the last three years. In each of those times, there have been a lot of changes in upper management as well as structure. It caused entire teams to be dissolved and an ongoing worry that jobs weren't secure enough.

    Advice to Management

This applies to upper management and ownership: Please better understand the roles of your teams when you start with new groups. Direct managers of teams are doing a great job though.

    Pros

Fun Job working with great people and store owners who love what they do!

    Cons

Were going through a buyout so there was a lot of uncertainty

    Advice to Management

Just was a lot of change going on

I worked at Natural Balance Pet Food part-time

    Pros

    Free dog or cat food
    Flexible schedule
    Management asleep at the wheel
Simple and brainless... just show up

    Cons

Incompetent supervision will punish you for doing too well and do everything in their power to prevent promotion. It takes 2 or 3 people to do the simple task of a single person. Education and experience do not matter to natural balance, and the turn over for reps is high. They refuse to listen to the "boots on the ground" part of their sales staff and seem befuddled when sales are not up to snuff.

the product used to be great, but has since fallen to a half step above grocery store brands in terms of both nutrition and marketing(which is essentially amatuer hour at this place)

    Advice to Management

hire smart and younger people to make the brand fun and competitive again, stop trying to make us work without paying us(as my bosses did time and time again)

    Pros

It use to be a really good almost great company when it was owned by Joey but now that it's corporate owned it's not the same.

    Cons

The supervisors, most not all, had bad attitudes and just treated those below them with very little respect.

    Advice to Management

None, now that Joey is no longer the owner

I worked at Natural Balance Pet Food full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free dog/cat food, a paycheck (although not a good one), great co workers (some) after leaving the hood, you got a "nicer" cubicle

    Cons

Disorganized. No communication. No room for growth and when you ask for it managers basically laugh in you face. Snotty women, perverted men

    Advice to Management

    Stop being so cheap

    Pros

They are very flexible with the hours and they give an average of 15-20 hours a week. This works really well with college students

    Cons

No movement up the ladder, they need to give feedback.

    Advice to Management

Give feedback to your employees, let them know when they did a good job, and offer them to opportunity to move up in the company.

I have been working at Natural Balance Pet Food part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is decent. FREE food voucher every month. Great if you have a special needs pet. Flexible hours.

    Cons

No raises ever. Supervisors are clueless and there is no communication between any of them. Zero incentives unless large market (I have gotten more incentives from stores where I am not an actual employee, but management loves me). Terrible web application for time reporting. Nobody above me has a clue on current tech/social media. Company has gotten super cheap and wont give you the items you need to be more successful. Again, supervision worthless if you have a question regarding product. Google is faster and less condescending.

    Advice to Management

Allow long time reps more freedom in terms of scheduling themselves. Stop treating all field reps as total idiots when most have more experience and education than the "supervision" and their degree mill BAs. Give raises when we take on added duties. Rebrand and learn to manage expectations. Food has nothing special anymore, the marketing team and developement folks need to be in stores and realizing trends as well as new nutritional info. Regional reps are worthless when they dont actually do their jobs.

    Pros

    Cons

This is a fun place to work, but unfortunately as a scientist there is no room for career growth.
