I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Laid back work/environment
    -Good pay for entry level
    -Good benefits
    -Good vacation and sick time
    -Pension
    -Great work/life balance

    Cons

Your brain will rot away. Need to be extremely self-motivated or a go-getter here. Very very easy to become lazy and complacent here. If you want to be an engineer in the world then do not come here.

Serious lack of leadership/mentorship. You'll kind of be expected to know things or learn them on your own because no one will really teach you anything. Management picks favorites and if you aren't a favorite then good luck being noticed or getting much work.

There's a lot to learn and it doesn't make sense at times.

Hard to get fired here which you would think is a pro, but all that means is that it's hard to get promoted here unless someone quits or retires. Work is mundane and not challenging.

    Advice to Management

Mentor your employees better and make sure they understand things.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most positions at NAVSEA Corona allows flexible hours. Very stable job. A lot to learn in the first year.

    Cons

The Acquisition Readiness department is not a good place to start for those that are young, fresh out of college. After about two years under this department, the work can become monotonous and boring.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees, not just the few people that you like.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay was decent, and the benefits were pretty good. There was plenty of opportunity for advancement.

    Cons

A lot of the interns (including myself) were cast aside as their mentors worked on different projects. It did not allow for technical growth as much as an intern would hope for, and it did not allow for us to believe that we belonged on the project.

    Advice to Management

Make sure the departments that receive interns will utilize them to the best of their ability. Otherwise, it is a waste of time and money for both the intern and the employers.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

We work on some groundbreaking work. We are actually saving lives with the tasks that we complete here on this base. Everyone I work with is very pleasant and all the management is very understanding.

    Cons

It is the government so it is going to be slow. There is a lot of bureaucracy you have to work with which can get very annoying. They don't always give the interns enough work to keep them busy.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. The issues with bureaucracy need to be fixed and a lot more could get done.

    Pros

Good benefits, possible exciting opportunities, upper management cares about career development, travel, PTO and sick leave, diverse workforce, easy to succeed.

    Cons

Extremely slow paced, excessive training requirements not applicable to career field, lack of knowledge and resources for projects, time wasted in the office.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many of the people are great people to work with: friendly, smart and care about their job. Flexibility in work schedule is great! All federal holidays off and great medical. Job security!

    Cons

Government work, so often it is slow. You have to wait a long time for people to respond and decisions to be made. Salary is good, but not private sector obviously.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the surveys that employees do.

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefits, job security, good work/life balance with maxiflex schedule which means you can do whatever as long as you have 80 hours while meeting core hours.

    Cons

No real engineering, boring, too many red tapes

I have been working at Naval Surface Warfare Center as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very few employers can beat the benefits that the federal government offers
    Work-life balance is top notch
    Low stress for most employees

    Cons

-Not much room to move up if you don't want to go into management
-Slow paced. I saw full time employees go weeks without having anything to do.
-My title was "Engineer." I put that in quotes because I didn't actually do anything related to engineering. It seemed that most of the interesting engineering work were given to contractors while the government was just doing the high level project management.

    Advice to Management

Give interns something to do! Otherwise the government is wasting all that tax money
