I have been working at Navistar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great heritage, great products, and some really terrific people. There are a lot of people who are trying to make the company better, but those people are not being listened to.

    Cons

Upper management is solely focused on getting product out the door, rather than slowing down and getting every detail right. Being competitive is enough for them, but when you're down on market share you have to exceed expectations and the culture at Navistar is "good enough". There's also a lack of accountability for when people drop the ball or processes are not working.

    Advice to Management

Get every aspect of the product right - from the very smallest detail. Don't follow the automotive paradigm of, "We'll fix it next year" - it no longer works in the marketplace. Also, pay more attention to developing the skills your people have - there are great people there, but they have no way to grow!

    Pros

Salary tends to be competitive, opportunities for growth are fair, automotive industry so interesting and always changing.

    Cons

Culture has changed significantly over the past several years, not for the better. Leadership is not trusted in general. Employees are not held accountable.

    Advice to Management

    Listen to high performing employees.

I worked at Navistar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are some good people at Navistar that are trying to make the company better. Unfortunately, most of the talented individuals have left for greener pastures, as the company as struggled mightily over the past five years. Upper management has tried to make the work environment more fun, even while introducing across-the-board pay cuts. The Lisle campus is beautiful and the cafeteria is pretty good. Relaxed dress code, though not everyone follows it. CEO has good intentions but inherited a tarnished brand from his predecessor's mistakes.

    Cons

Simple, this company doesn't know how to make money. The company has only made a profit in 1 of the last 20 quarters or so. Brand reputation is bad across the industry. Very high turnover within engineering. Did you come out of school with a shiny degree looking to apply your knowledge and learn new skills? Then you should go somewhere else. Young engineers are thrown into the fire with no experience, all too often falling back on the "this is how we did it last time" philosophy for designs. Much of engineering management are simply work-trackers and do not have the knowledge to pass on to their subordinates. People with associates degrees can design 3D models and update bills of material, you don't need an engineering degree to do that job.

These are my experiences over the course of 4+ years in engineering.

    Advice to Management

Engineers need inspirational and knowledgeable leaders. Other companies in the industry employ very knowledgeable individuals in engineering management positions (masters / phD. degrees), Navistar settles for the guy who's been a good spreadsheet tracker for 10 years to be Chief Engineer of X system.

I worked at Navistar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The PEOPLE that work there (aka - the ones that actually DO the work) are awesome. The gym, the campus is beautiful - albeit, now mostly empty with all the layoffs and employees that have left.

    Cons

Employees that are still there are paying the price for upper management's mistakes that were made almost 5 years ago! They are extremely overworked, having to pick up the slack for the thousands of employees that were laid off, or have left the company!

    Advice to Management

This is more for the Board of Directors - obviously upper management has NOT been able to turn the ship around. It's way overdue to clean house and bring in new management with fresh ideas! Employee morale was extremely low last year. Now, if possible, it's even lower.

    Pros

Work environment and culture are good. Many efforts are being made by senior leadership to provide the proper resource to optimize the business.

    Cons

The truck market is extremely week leading to low profitability. Morale is low as well at many of the plants due to low production orders and uncertain future...

    Advice to Management

Continue to push change and transformation especially in the areas of design and reduction of complexity. Provide the right resources and the turnaround will continue.
