I have been working at Navistar (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Product is not typical and new applications can be exciting to see come to fruition. Vehicles can be one of a kind or part of brand recognition for another company.

    Cons

Tough market conditions can create job security jitters. Lack of investment in manufacturing modernization can be demoralizing and reflect poorly on keeping superior talent.

    Advice to Management

    Modernize more than World Headquarters

I worked at Navistar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Top-notch office facility, particularly if you are lucky enough to work in one of the front buildings. The engineers are hidden in the less plush back buildings.
    - World class gym
    - Plenty of young professionals, a rarity in the auto industry
    - Convenient Metra access for those who wish to commute from Downtown Chicago

    Cons

    - Rampant layoffs do not help employee morale
    - Dysfunctional HR, policies keep changing
    - Top heavy organization
    - Promotions are practically non-existent, particularly below the senior leadership level

    Advice to Management

Reduce the number of management layers. Too much of a gap between the lower level employees and senior leadership.

I worked at Navistar as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic employees, lots of people willing to help and teach a college student, people are very passionate about cars and trucks

    Cons

High turnover especially at middle management level. Intern program was disorganized and scattered and there was no communication from HR to the intern group.

    Advice to Management

Identify young talent and develop them into your future leaders instead of having lots of turnover in the middle management section.

    Pros

Steady Paycheck, Clean carpeting and bathrooms.

    Cons

Instability. Company hasn't been profitable in many years. Layoffs are frequent. Management cannot be trusted.

    Advice to Management

Be trustworthy. Treat employees with respect. Hire women and minorities to shake things up a bit. The company cannot change and grow if you keep hiring and promoting white males.

I worked at Navistar full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The building is nice, benefits are nice, and the cafeteria is nice. Also, there are many areas you could take your career...if they let you...

    Cons

You have a difficult time controlling your own career progression. People are stuck in position they didn't want and don't have the opportunity to move. You're at the mercy of your managers.

    Advice to Management

Give employees more control over their career path. Ask them where they would like to go rather than just putting them somewhere because that group needs people. Give them options and you won't have as many people leaving.

Tough business environment at the time with military contracts ending and diesel technology not meeting EPA standards.
