      Working at Navistar

      Pros

Great people to work for and the atmosphere is great as well. Of course there are days where everyone is stressed out but that is normal. Really fast paced which enables you to learn quickly.

      Cons

Since it is fast paced, some of the processes are not fully defined as to who is responsible for them. It might even take a few months to get access to all of the tools as it required IT and Managers approval. Some of the systems are outdated.

      Decent Starting Company

Oct 23, 2020 - Software Engineer in Lisle, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good work environment, great people who care for each other (at least in the Software and Controls department), and overall challenging work that keeps you busy but not too busy.

      Cons

No annual increase in pay, instead it is tied to role promotions. So expect to jump positions for pay increase or move jobs after a few years.

Solid company that is on its way up.

Aug 3, 2020 - Engineer, Senior in Melrose Park, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The company has worked it's way out of issues from a years ago. Great people to work with. Most managers on engineering side are open to letting employees move around and try new areas/groups. They are open minded to pursuing interesting/trying new opportunities.

      Cons

Benefits: engineering salaries are not competitive. Healthy insurance is expensive for not a lot of coverage. Year to year salary increases are "performance based" but the average salary increase does not match inflation year to year.

      Great people and experience

Apr 9, 2020 - Senior Engineer in Melrose Park, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Plenty of great people who are happy to pass along knowledge and experience. Flexible work schedule. Very stable job. Great experience with everyone from the Chief engineer level and lower.

      Cons

Engineering executives more influenced by accountants than engineers. Program level decisions consistently align with cost reduction rather than applying lessons that have been learned many times over. It seems like there's never enough time to do something the right way at Navistar the first time, but there's always enough time later to patch it together when it's too late to address the root cause of an issue. Pay is average and increases are minimal.

      Pros

Iconic firm, long history of high quality products. Great people to work with.

      Cons

Company is a dinosaur as far as policies and procedures, need to bring the organization flatter and streamline day to day work. Too much gets in the way of getting simple work done.

Overall not the greatest, but good positions available

Feb 5, 2013 - Senior Product Development Engineer in Lisle, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great people, lots of great places to live in the area. There are definitely great jobs available that encourage innovation and creativity, although these are few and far between and tainted by the rest of the company a little.

      Cons

Upper management tends not to take advice from company's own engineers. It took a long time for them to realize that advanced EGR was not going to work, even though every engineer in the industry had been telling them for years. Lots of yes-men on the ladder. The corporate culture tends to stifle innovation (advanced EGR was advertised as an innovative technology, when in fact it was simply more of the same technology that met previous emissions standards). There's not much funding for research-type projects. Company tends to follow other companies' technologies rather than develop their own. Now that the top management has changed some or all of this may be different.

      Management Can Ruin Anything.....

      Jan 21, 2016 -

      Pros

I had many different experiences at Navistar, worked at several locations and met some really great people....but...

      Cons

Management has taken the company down a rabbit hole in recent years. The environment has ruined what was a really great place to work. Sales down, customer doesn't trust....and the brand has been ruined.

Great People, However Company is still fighting its recent past

Jan 8, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in Lisle, IL

      Pros

      Great people, reasonably solid mid to VP level management who generally care about their people; nice job of thanking and recognizing employees and insuring they know they are appreciated; still have some nice benefits that other companies don't offer;

      Cons

Company is still fighting its past and poor decisions by previous management to pursue an engine emissions strategy that did not work; Company operates in the very challenging North American Truck industry and will have a harder and harder time competing based on their manufacturing scale until they regain market share and can produce / sell more trucks.

Great culture at the finance company.

      Apr 3, 2010 -  in Schaumburg, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great people, fun work environment, new offices, casual Fridays, business casual work attire, friendly and approachable senior management, respect for people at all levels.

      Cons

Unfortunately, a lack of vision for the future and poor planning by Executive Management at the finance company has led to a spin-off of the retail portion of the business.

      Still Experiencing Some Difficulties

Feb 1, 2016 - Anonymous Employee in Lisle, IL
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Still some great people there, and more recent focus by top management on increasing market share, seems to suggest they understand the real problems there.

      Cons

This company has over-focused on cutting costs by reducing staff as the quickest way to achieve the EBITDA numbers promised to the street. Employee morale overall is lowered by these actions. Formerly, a good place to work, hope that is true again in the near future, but career advancement is currently very limited for most employees.
