    Cons

    Hit or Miss Management
The winchester location has a bad reputation for hiring lots of people and firing people for made-up reasons. During my time, I came up for several promotions but an excuse was made everytime I came up for a promotion. Its unfortunate since I have more than 5 years of experience and a 4 year degree. I hate that I havent been given an equal chance because of Nepotism and the fact that I am not from the area and dont know alot of people in the winchester, va area. I am just warning you, this is the type of reputation NFCU of Winchester has.

    Advice to Management

I dont have the right the right words to express my concerns. At the entry-level call center level in the winchester area, this company is ran very poorly. You hire everyone and on the off chance that you know them you may provide them an opportunity or fire them for no good reason. The alternative is to leave them in a position where they are stuck. I saw a well qualified person fired, a person that knows somebody promoted, and an individual who has been there for a long period of time stuck at MSR II and given no chance of being promoted. You explain this to me and I might be able to provide better feedback...

I have been working at Navy Federal Credit Union full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Navy Federal is absolutely focused on member service. The company genuinely cares about the members especially those in the armed forces. The culture is relatively laid back and people are supportive and kind. People are generally happy to work there.

    Cons

The company is going through immense growth that affects the overall culture and also the quality of life surrounding work. Navy Federal literally creates a traffic jam every day in Virginia and Pensacola HQ and is adamantly against remote work. The benefits are good but often lag behind peers. For example, Paternity Leave was only instituted in 2017 and even then only 10 days.

    Advice to Management

Consider what it means to add thousands of new employees each year to what was not a particularly large financial institution to begin with. This kind of change can greatly affect a corporate culture.

I worked at Navy Federal Credit Union full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Life is good outside of Accounting. Most of the groups have decent work hours, able to attend classes at the onsite gym and have time to take lunch.

    Cons

If you are looking for a work life balance stay away from Accounting, especially the Technical Accounting team. In TDR Technical Accounting you will be working 60 hours per week on average. During year end close prepare yourself to work until 1am or 2am every night for the first two weeks. You will receive limited training, very poor management guidance, lack of support, and it is expected of you to understand all of their processes on day one.
TDR Technical Accounting is the worst area, due to having a large amount of data validation. Your days and evenings will be consumed by it. They are looking for really strong accountants with extensive experience and especially a CPA license. Such experience does not get applied, however, because you will spend a majority of your time doing data validations.
The TDR Technical Accounting department has been a revolving door. People come and go. Even though this team is relatively small, 10 people left the team within the past 3 years. This is a huge red flag for new candidates.
If this still sounds manageable to you, imagine that on top of the long hours and boring work your manager will disrespect, micromanage, control and undermine you with any chance she gets. Nothing can be done without her permission, so forget about making decisions on your own. This specific person is famous for her back stubbing and has a vindictive personality. Senior management is well aware of issue, but despite multiple complaints they continue to allow this specific manager to run the team in this dysfunctional way. This destroys the values of this otherwise professional organization. Disrespect and abuse by the manager has been the main reason of the high turnover.
Compensation structure in Accounting department is strange, where Accountant 2 and Accountant 3 level is eligible for additional bonus outside of company annual performance bonus (PIP). Higher roles demand higher expectations and could result in lower PIP. Therefore, Accountants feel safer in lower positions, where they exceed expectations and receive a larger annual bonus. Being in Accountant 3 or Assistant Manager position could easily result in you earning less that Accountant 2. This unusual structure discourages people from growing and moving up to the next level.

There are a lot of employees in the company who worked there for 10-20-30 years. It might sound attractive at first, but the reality is that such people are stuck at Navy. In a large company like this a person is dedicated to a small piece of the puzzle and the experience you get is often not easily convertible to other jobs. In addition, this negatively affects younger personnel, as they have no space to move up since higher positions are occupied by veterans.

Other minor notes: No free coffee, but coffee at the cafeteria is affordable starting from $1. Styrofoam cup alone costs $0.10 (yes, they charge for that!). After a while you will note the lack of variety in cafeteria food, although Food trucks partially resolve this issue. Lunch is not cheap ranges $5-15. Team lunches/birthday celebrations are not reimbursable, but the company buys dinner for accountants that stay late to close the books.

    Advice to Management

Advise to the management of Comptroller group is to get rid of the toxic manager in the Technical Accounting team. This person caused the high turnover within the team. She has created an illusion that people are leaving because of long hours and complicated work. The true reason is her poor management style.

    Pros

great chances to move up in the company. great experience

    Cons

not a career place of employment, and moving up solely depends on the people you know, company not meant for people who have their own opinions.

    Advice to Management

please check all sides of a story before making a biased decision, race should not have a play in things.
