I have been working at Neiman Marcus full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Changed return policy to 60 days vs. unlimited. This should be better for Associates not to get commission reversal long after sale.
Good employee discount -doubled several times a year.
    Health Benefits are decent.

    Cons

Micro-management of client contact. Lots of busy work that does not produce sales.
Commission only but expected to work like hourly
Forcing focus off your own client list & how you have successfully run your business.
Online NM drops gift cards, discounts everyday and 1-2 days before store promotion they have it online.

    Advice to Management

Respect your sales people & allow them to run their business.
Treat your employees well & your customers will be taken care of at a higher standard.
Limit or eliminate competition with our online site.
Set challenging but attainable sales goals. Unrealistic goals are discouraging not empowering.

I worked at Neiman Marcus full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great discounts, fun team, and amazing in store events

    Cons

Don't expect to move up in the company. It's all politics and who knows who. Commission is hard after returns.

    Advice to Management

Give everyone a base pay plus a small commission. Change return policy to prevent customers from wearing an item and returning it. It effects paycheck beyond sales person control

The discount. you meet some very interesting people. Some managers actually care about your career they will do anything to help you succeed

    Cons

the executive team walka around like they are shoppers nose in the air. They act like they are to good to help you or good to say good morning and have the most negative energy.

    Advice to Management

corporate should re-evaluate all their managers and associates. Some managers are great others are lazy all they do is sit in the office all day! And release the economy has changed so make sales goals more acheivable.

    Pros

401K, Credit Union, Great for anyone who is a manager in the upper management's good graces.

    Cons

Micromanaging (they write you up for being a minute early or a minute late). Lazy management (sits in back all day making personal phone calls and checking facebook). Doesn't coach up, only coaches out. Management creates their own rules and only follows procedures when convenient. Will transfer employees they like to help them be more successful. Unethical HR staff looks out for management more than the sales staff and fraternizes with management. General manager doesn't know sales associates names. Management punishes you for your numbers, but also prevents you from doing your job efficiently. You are graded for how many people you contact vs the quality of your outreach.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to effectively manage staff and learn motivational skills. Help build moral during a trying economy. Stop blaming sales people for lack of business. Stop being hypocritical. Overall just get it together.

I worked at Neiman Marcus (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great health benefits, and 401k plans. Great employee incentives and spiffs. Beautiful Merchandise, and training events are helpful for growth. Great employee discount

    Cons

Standing long hours and rarely any weekends off unless requested

    Advice to Management

I strongly believe management positions should have higher standards when allocating individuals to these "executive" positions. Management are the ones we look up to as role models and for motivation, and they should have certain skills and abilities that only a great leader can fulfil. Be more mindful on management selection, because great leaders shouldn't be getting paid to just cruise around a department store all day feeling superior and acknowledging ONLY when good performance is done. But instead a continual genuine support, rather than just a superficial hello or occasional pat on the back when their is a "visit" or a beneficial factor for management involved. I experienced poor ethical communication from
    Management on many occasions.

    Pros

Employee discount is the best benefit. Neimans also provides an iPhone to full time sales associates and you will be highly encouraged to use the internal customer management software to build your business.

    Cons

You will accrue paid time off but it is often difficult to take vacation time especially during peak seasons. Be ready to work weekends and holidays.
