    High turnover

    Pros

Progressive transportation planning work and opportunity to improve communities. Offices located in walkable downtowns.

    Cons

Senior management tended to be self-focused and frequently undermined each other. Most of the firm’s talented staff left over a five-year period before long-overdue management changes were finally made, including hiring a new Managing Director.

Passionate people, Autonomy, and Fulfilling Work

    Pros

A progressive firm where most staff strongly believe in the mission and people do the work because they're passionate about making places better through transportation. As a staff person here, you have an incredible about of autonomy and flexibility in your schedule and the firm rewards those who are proactive, and are ok being thrown in the deep end. All of the offices are located in the heart of interesting cities which is a reflection of the company's commitment to transportation choices. One of the primary reason I chose to work at Nelson\Nygaard is because I never wanted to question the "transportation moral compass" of our work. Some of the top national experts in various areas of transportation work here, and that collective knowledge is great.

    Cons

Despite the benefits. It's still consulting. There are pressures to maintain billability and in recent years, it seems that the salary and benefits seem modest compared to firms of similar size. The firm has gone through considerable growth in the past few years and that has had an impact on the "quirky" place that it once was and there seems to be a larger divide between the upper management and staff, which is likely alienating for newer staff in particular. While the firm is good for autonomous "go-getters", there is minimal formal support or internal coaching for longer-term career growth and that type of guidance must be sought informally or from outside the firm.

Smart and idealistic, leading-edge transportation and land use planning

    Pros

Staff is very smart, highly educated, and very in tune with the latest thinking in new urbanism. Company organization is conscientious and even-handed. Good environment for recent grad school graduates Lots of opportunity for advancement, and for working on a wide variety of projects Offices on both coasts, transferring not a problem

    Cons

Not much collaboration among staff; you're kind of on your own with your assignments Team leaders don't necessarily know anything about team management; very little acknowledgement or coaching beyond annual reviews Pay is OK but you won't get rich here; very small annual bonuses, moderate pay scale

    A for-profit company with a non-profit mission

    Business Outlook

    Pros

You get to work on the projects you want to work on, the ones that are interesting and doing the right thing for downtowns and communities. Benefits are great, flexible schedule, lots of trust to get your work done.

    Cons

The company is growing fast and some of the small office culture is leaving as the company is growing. Management and admin are also trying to keep up with the growth, sometimes not as well as they should. It may take another couple of years before the company's shoes fit. We do not have a CEO, and many of the company's management staff both work on project work and are managing the company.

    Pros

Great place to work! Great colleagues, benefits, and business strategy. It feels like I'm actually making an impact in the world 😀

    Cons

There's a lot of downtime in my position, and I don't feel like I'm being utilized to my full potential.

    Non-Planners Not Welcome

    Mar 20, 2015 - Non-Planner in San Francisco, CA

    Pros

Nice benefits. Competitive salary. Great location in SOMA. Inspiring mission.

    Cons

No career mobility as a non-planner. They ignore and sometimes outright disrespect non-planners. The Board is made up of almost exclusively white males; this is really a shame in San Francisco. The nepotism in this company is concerning. Management values veteran status more than talent and potential. I started with Nelson\Nygaard with the promise of opportunity in my team. That never happened and still hasn't, by the looks of it.
