I have been working at Neogen full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Hours are ok, though they have been better. Immediate supervision is more in tune to the workers' needs than upper management is.

    Cons

Pay is AWFUL. Neogen will NOT pay you what you are worth. Unless you are a money-maker for the company (i.e.-sales, marketing), you are looked at as nothing. They feel YOU should pay THEM for the "privilege" of working here.

    Advice to Management

Resign. Get peoplen in here who are more attentive to employees' needs. Pay them a LIVABLE wage.

I worked at Neogen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You do learn a lot about animal genomics and the overall field from working here.

    Cons

-Lots of overtime (not forced, but essentially forced through peer pressure
-Horrible low wages--barely above what a Walmart worker makes for people with degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, etc.
    -Poor management
-Felt like you did not matter to the company, therefore turnover was extremely high.

    Advice to Management

Neogen has ridiculously high hiring standards for lab technicians, when they are asked to do menial labor tasks. I worked with 15 or so other DNA extraction technicians who all had high GPAS in very difficult bachelor's degrees, yet we were all spending hours scanning barcodes and punching out chunks of cow hair. Those tasks could have been done by people without college degrees and more intellectually stimulating tasks could have been done by those who did have strong science backgrounds. Use your employees (including their advice) better according to their skills or you will forever have horrific turnover.

    Pros

The coworkers, you will quickly bond and become friends with most because you will realize that you're all stuck in it together and going through the same stuff. Some of the managers/supervisors have your best interest and well being in mind, but this is limited to a few and you will quickly learn which ones they are. Chance to gain some quick experience and leave for a better job.

    Cons

Almost too many to name. Pay is absurdly low for what they expect from you and what you should be payed. Upper management is delusional about what's going on around them. Turnover rate is so high you won't know some of your coworkers for more than a couple months. No communication or clear direction from management, you'll just be left feeling confused and frustrated. If you perform well at your job, you'll just be overworked and under appreciated/compensated. No room for advancement, most of the position changes are given to favorites. Complaints about work problems and issues within the company just fall on deaf ears as management just doesn't want to take suggestions or advice to help fix things.

    Advice to Management

Communicate and listen to your employees instead of assuming you're always right. Appreciate the people below you instead of treating them like another piece of equipment.

    I worked at Neogen full-time

    Pros

Good place to get some experience and move on. Nearly impossible to get fired. Great place for slackers to be employed but if you are a motivated person who wants to move up the ladder, this is not the place for you.

    Cons

Promotions are based upon the buddy system. Experience means nothing at this company. Managers are sub-par and inexperienced. Company rife with nepotism. Get your 3 to 5 years of beginning experience here and move to a more competent company. Try to get hired by a more competent company first though, you will learn more if you do, unless you enjoy the life of a slacker, then you would be a great fit.

    Pros

The Benefits, 401k, stock, pto (although they could dish more), company events like picnics, family events and promotional events like the sparrow health days and Red Cross blood donations

    Cons

Management is terrible and you get treated like you don't know anything, they don't train anyone properly, the pay sucks, not enough promotion or pay upgrades available...it's like a family plan they only push the people they like into promotions and they have wayyyy to much overtime and not enough time with family

    Advice to Management

Take a management class and treat everyone how you deserve to be treated

    Pros

Generous holidays, there's really no other positive things to say about Neogen. This place is a really terrible place to work for.

    Cons

Compensation is terrible, management does not know what they are doing or what is going on. Management does not hire the best person for the job, the promote friends or sycophants. This entire place is backwards and they've got a nice view of their rectums.

    Advice to Management

Light a match and walk away...

I worked at Neogen (More than a year)

    Pros

Work life balance was good in that there were no consequences for missing timelines so you didn't need to bother with overtime or homework.

    Cons

    1. The pay is far below market, even for Michigan. It almost impossible not to get better pay elsewhere.
    2. Management plays favorites and if you're not on the hot list you're treated like livestock.
    3. The company is very cheap, and will shoot themselves in the foot to save a dime.
    4. Corporate culture is disgusting. Backstabbers, and liars are everywhere. Everyone hides behind paperwork and bureaucracy to avoid doing their jobs.

    Advice to Management

Maybe take the time to appreciate that having a near a dozen people quit in the last four months means you're doing it wrong. You will never have the loyalty of your staff until you EARN it.

I worked at Neogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most managers are flexible with hours.

    Cons

The salaries are disproportionately low! Very few opportunities to advance but you're always expected to have an increased number of responsibilities (without much of a pay raise to go with it). They do not provide their employees with the proper training and resources to do their jobs well, and to make things worse, management does not effectively communicate necessary information! There is no discipline - some employees, and even managers, will speak to co-workers in a very demeaning, belittling, or even cruel manner with no punishment. And if the victim tries to speak out against it they are typically threatened by their manager and/or HR. Essentially this company squeezes every drop of energy from their employees that they can without gratitude or considering their well-being. Most people work here for a couple of years just to gain experience and then move on to something worth their time and effort!

    Advice to Management

Salaries should be competitive and there needs to be additional opportunities for advancement. There also needs to be a serious overhaul of workplace attitudes and etiquette! Employees, especially managers, who are rude, disrespectful, or otherwise injurious to co-workers should be disciplined. Communication also needs to be improved.

    Pros

Great coworkers. Everyone gets along well and they tend to go out together

    Cons

Bad management, poor communication, and low pay are just some of the things that are wrong with this place. Managers favor employees. The company is expanding but only laterally; there are very little opportunities to move up in a career path and even then the pay is still mind boggling low.

    Advice to Management

    Pay your employees more.
