Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Nerdy Place

    Pros

Great place if you're looking for a place to embrace "fun at work". People work hard but understand that everyone needs good work/life balance. I personally never had to work extra hours, and I was client facing. I have worked in places that expected you to be heads down the full time you were at work, but if I want to enjoy a round of ping pong or play a game in the middle of the work day, it's a place that welcomes fun as long as you get your work done. There's plenty of events at the actual office to at least get people together, and the many slack channels for hobbies and interests really helps connect, though it is quieter since pre-covid.

    Cons

Sometimes projects don't have a perfect vision. This I don't think is a knock at Nerdery, but more to the industry as a whole though. We can't always plan everything ahead, and at a consulting firm, it's just hard sometimes because you have expectations of delivery you might not have as just a full time employee of the client.

    Great team but poor leadership

    Pros

+Wonderful people who care about each other and doing a good job +Some of the client work Nerdery does is very cool +Casual dress code and dogs in the office (if you work in one of the offices) +Very helpful Tech Support team +If you like free company-branded stuff, you'll get a lot of shirts, hoodies, glasses, gifts +Good work/life balance +Good healthcare/dental benefits +It’s a US based company so it's rare to have super early or late-night calls +Small enough company to know most people

    Cons

Senior leadership is the biggest challenge that Nerdery faces. At the heart of the problem is the CEO (cofounder who assumed role a while back) and his lack of experience. Inefficiencies, group decision making, lack of accountability across all levels, limited delegation of authority beyond the leadership team, etc. So many unforced errors and rookie mistakes along with painfully short-term thinking are regular occurrences. Some other items to flag for someone considering working for Nerdery: +Even though turnover is high for a lot of tech firms (esp. during the “Great Resignation”), the revolving door of great people at Nerdery may make your head spin. +If diversity/inclusion is important to you, Nerdery may not be a good fit for you. The Founder/CEO has openly declared in all-company meetings that efforts to support equity/diversity slow things down (ex: recruiting) and are not a priority for the company. +Nerdery is run like an agency - - utilization targets and billable hour requirements for those in client delivery roles. If this isn't something you want to be held accountable for meeting, Nerdery may not be a good fit for you.

    Fine organization, low pay

    Apr 7, 2022 - Project Manager
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Management would typically get out of the way unless you were on a high visibility project. Had smart people working there that had mostly the same success metrics to share and drive towards.

    Cons

Some leaders that "outkicked their coverage". Didn't have the skills to be able to fill their roles. Pay was sub-industry standard.
