Pros
- Great resume builder - Nest is leading in the connected home space - Good products - Incredibly smart and passionate people working on the business (that are not senior management) - The people in middle management and execution are very collaborative
Cons
- 100% internally focused - don't think about the consumer when developing marketing plans, only worry about what the CEO and other Google leadership cares about - Fear based leadership - Meetings, meetings, meetings, meetings and many times, meetings about other meetings - Sr. Leadership are incredibly insecure and not trusting of their employees - Ego driven culture at the top, not open to collaboration or any different points of view - Company culture is severely lacking - though, they are trying to improve this - Overall the senior leadership was hired when Nest was a tiny Silicon Valley start up - the leadership they have in place now is not capable of evolving it into the highly functional, creative marketing team it needs to be. - Commute from SF to Palo Alto - they highly discourage working from the city (or even from the Google SF office) - I witnessed a member of senior leadership ask another member of senior leadership to get their team to write positive Glass Door reviews - so clearly they know that there is an issue with company morale.

Pros
Great vision, clear mission. Clear goal with well established roadmap and clear focus Obsessed with design and quality Self driven and hardworking employees Kind and direct culture, just at the right balance for a hardware company to get things done A strong executive teams. A CEO who can and is willing to challenge his team for the best A management team who cares Great compensation and benefits
Cons
Still going through growing pain A bigger startup which comes with a lot of work

Pros
- Good benefits after the Google Acquisition (free meals, great 401K and health benefits) - Excellent space in the "automated home" with a lot of potential
Cons
- No clear vision and bad direction from its leaders. Product launches are never within schedule or products are shipped too quickly without the proper testing. - Inexperienced executive management, no real leaders to look up to. - Too many egos and wrong individuals appointed to managerial roles. - Treats its super star employees as 'second class citizens' and those employees are starting to leave the company. - Teams are competing against each other instead of working together creating a very hostile environment. - Horrible work/life balance. Employes work very long hours and things still don't get done. Management doesn't seem to care about what is happening internally. - Bad environment and overall culture.

Pros
Selling to Google was the best move the company made. It is very apparent we'd have failed without their help. It is also refreshing to see more and more Googlers coming over that have been at Google 8+ years as they are bringing in fresh ideas and ways of working together. The benefits are great now that we are under their umbrella but there is a culture clash. New office is 1000x better than the old. There is still a ton of potential if we course correct and get some more new senior management.
Cons
Yes, there is a culture problem. People have brought this up in all hands and it gets brushed aside and they are obviously adding reviews here now like the one “Building a global brand in record time.” (total PR damage control) We have become ultra political with little teamwork and communication happening, despite the fact that everyone is in meetings all day. The result is that nothing is getting down now. It's come to a screeching halt. To add to it, the company is adding 600+ people without thinking about how well function at that size. This has by far been the worst experience in the work place I've ever had so as my title states can it get any worse?

Pros
Google Benefits - Pay, RSUs, Health Care, Child Care, Free Food Smart People - Work with some of the most talented engineers in the Valley Passionate Engineers - Engineers care about their work Beautiful Product - Engineers have vision
Cons
Unfortunately Apple culture is alive and well at Nest. Fear Based management is prevalent with Micromanagement to the Nth degree a not only a norm but also fully encouraged by Directors and above. Product is stalled due to manufacturing operations delays as Apple management seems more interested gathering irrelevant data to impress C suite as opposed to providing actual results. Expect management to play 'pin the tale the on donkey' (you) as opposed to being collaborative and supportive and providing direction, encouragement and guidance. Employees are threatened, accused and intimidated as opposed to being inspired and empowered Ex-Apple employees use Nest as a direct pipeline to pull their former Apple co-workers which only further engrains the Apple culture at Nest. Expect to spend your lunches talking about Apple as Ex-Applers love reminiscing about their days at Apple with little passion shown for Nest or Nest products Management hides information from cross functional teams to better advance their agenda as opposed to advancing the product to the best interest of the company (No transparency). Few Nest employees are happy or actually want to work at Nest and are instead only waiting for their Nest vesting before leaving. There is a HUGE exodus to Google and this is apparent as new departures happen on a daily basis Although Google recently booted Tony Fadell, the Apple culture is too fully engrained to be purged from this Mess of a Nest. Upper management has wasted the efforts from truly talented Product Design and Industrial Engineers by trying to be the next Apple instead of just releasing cool product which customers would love. Advise: Steer Clear of this Toxic Heap of a Mess.

Pros
• Friendly colleagues with great attitudes • Google perks • Best cafe; even better than Google's • Decent impactful projects • Good W/L balance
Cons
Engineering management is incompetent. I had little confidence in my manager's technical ability and the advice and suggestions he made were often horrible. Instead of leading the team, he often sought to stroke his own ego with bad technical advice which left some on the team chasing red herrings. This wouldn't be a huge deal if he was a good people-person and actually cared about my career growth, but he didn't. Our 1:1's mostly involved him asking about my current progress on projects instead of helping foster career growth. Instead of being the tie breaker for team resolutions he often remained neutral, or even worse presented inferior alternatives than the options at hand.

Pros
I have a lot of freedom in my role, and I'm trusted to make a lot of decisions on my own. We have a lot of tools and a lot of assets. So, there's a lot of opportunity to collaborate and involve other people, but I haven't had anyone looking over my shoulder since I've been here. We have a lot of freedom to get what we need as long as we can make a case for it (being a part of Alphabet opens a lot of doors). The daily perks are amazing and the long-term benefits are really meaningful. It's the only job I've ever had where friends will send me articles asking me if I knew how many cool things my company offered. Above all, I've had great support from the entire organization. Everyone from engineering to VPs have helped me on projects, and I've never been worried about reaching out to make a connection or ask for help.
Cons
We are busy. Really buys. I've never been pressured to work harder than I was comfortable doing, but there's always something to do. This isn't just a matter of hiring or people setting unreasonable goals, though. We are still in transition from startup to established company, and we are working on tools that allow teams of 10 to accomplish much more than twice as much as a team of five could do. I hope this is a sign that management doesn't want to hire someone in January if there want be a place for them in July.
