I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits. Good product with lots of potential.

Probably still a decent place to work if you aren't in support.

    Cons

Working in support used to be a great place. You had time to follow up and work with customers, and they weren't focused on Metrics.

They shifted the focus to Metrics and after laying off about half the support center and the workload was unchanged. Instead of focusing on solving problems you were just fighting fires.

Lots of tools available to do the job, but many of them have a lot of use ability issues.

There is definitely a clique within the company that gets promoted and advanced faster if you know and work with the right people.

Morale was low when I departed and turnover seemed to be accelerating.

    Advice to Management

Managers should NOT be remote to their staff if it can be helped.
I had 4 different managers in 3 years. 2 local, 2 remote. It was always better with a local manager.

Work on actually balancing the workload across the teams and sites.

Continue to make the organization more flat by removing layers of bureaucracy and focus on listening to your front line workers. Seriously, listen to the support team directly.

I have been working at NetApp (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome work culture. Flexible work hours. Lot of things learn and work on. Talented people, lots of training opportunities. Management is very supportive.

    Cons

Whole storage industry is on a slippery roads. So, future looks bleak.

    Advice to Management

Invest more on innovative products. And whenever possible, move the performing employees to new projects instead of laying them off

I worked at NetApp (More than 5 years)

    Pros

High pay working in anything sales related (or management of course). No problem find a parking space. Gym is never crowded. No lines at cafe.

    Cons

Text book 1980's Jack Welch style corporation. Everything is about reducing costs and paying management more. Notable anti-US bias. Nothing even minimally progressive about this place (in the US anyway). No teamwork, everyone is a silo to make layoffs easy as possible.

    Advice to Management

None. Hope you enjoy your wealth while others struggle.

    Pros

Good Work Culture. Small teams so more chances of getting leadership positions early on. No fixed timings for work. Work from home option available.

    Cons

Saturated Technology wise. Not much of new technologies to work with. Cloud adoption has been slow. Jobs not very stable due to layoffs happening frequently.

    Advice to Management

    Innovate

    Pros

At the time, everyone was really great and friendly, the buildings are modern and cubicles were roomy (until they downsized them). The thing I miss most is the cafeteria, it had GREAT food every day so I didn't have to worry about making lunch or going anywhere. Salary was decent.

    Cons

They are having an annual layoff now. Rumors are they'll have a second layoff this year. Company revenue is declining and they aren't innovating. I'm sure they are trying to keep afloat, and they'll be ok for years to go thanks to their cash on hand, but all the signs are there. Unless they perform a miracle, they're going down.

    Advice to Management

Don't screw up Solidfire, it might be the only hope.

    Pros

Company tries to look after its employees. It works to make best place to work lists.

    Cons

Technical support is perpetually understaffed and often in management flux. That makes it much more stressful than employees in other areas seem to experience.

    Advice to Management

    Consistency and staffing

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, treats employees with respect, incredible amounts of training, good compensation if laid off

    Cons

Newest cluster software never took off so had to reinvent itself, lay off many. NetApp needs to find a way to compete with better OS

    Pros

The people, the atmosphere, the little things that the company does for the employees, the benefits are great, and they are willing to work with you if you need to work from home.

    Cons

Recently went through a re-org where they laid off 12% of employees. I believe that this will have a long-term positive impact.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that these recent changes were not in vain and do what is necessary so that we can improve the company's vision, sales, salary increases, bonuses, even better health benefits, etc.
