I worked at NetApp full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work environment, very flexible, good benefits. Lots of free training and new technology. Decent pay for most parts of the country, but probably not enough to live on comfortably in the Sunnyvale/San Jose area, at least for most non-sales types.

    Cons

Repeated RIFs have devastated morale. Most recently they let go of a bunch of E-Series sales & support folks, with very little warning, right before the holidays. I know OEM sales were struggling, and SolidFire is supposedly the new hotness, but still, c'mon guys.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to return to profitability and growth ASAP. Don't lay off good people just to make the shareholders happy. Figure out a way to retrain & reassign internally instead of constantly using layoffs. Don't let the Cisco tail wag your dog. Maybe acquire a hyperconverged vendor? Or go private a la EMC/Dell so you don't have to be a slave to Wall St. & quarterly numbers?

    Pros

Great people, great culture. People wanted you to succeed. Leadership was driven to keep the culture egalitarian.

    Cons

Company wasn't growing, so growth opportunities were lacking. My unit was probably the worst performing unit in the company. In the end its a product company that doesn't know services.

    Advice to Management

Motivate 'Lifers' to move on. Create a path to allow folks to find careers in other BUs within the company

I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great culture, great people to work with. Definitely an enjoyable atmosphere to spend your time working and building a fulfilling career

    Cons

Execution and management can be a bit localized. If you are outside of a major corporate office (SVL, RTP) visibility is extremely difficult.

    Advice to Management

I always enjoyed the positive and candid nature of the business, though sometimes that can pull the wool over the eyes of some from within. In those circumstances being more open and honest in addition to being candid would be of great value.

    Pros

Flex time, great campus, great benefits, and employees are respected and valued. The Professional Services / Sales organization is challenging and has many opportunities for growth.

    Cons

after hours and weekend work at times due to my customer's schedules. The Professional Services positions can be stressful at times and have a lot of travel depending on the time of year.

    Advice to Management

Keep listening to your employees, continue to offer career advancement or horizontal moves in the company. I would like to see more stock option grants offered as incentives.

"Great people, growing pains, still stuck in box selling"

    Pros

Smart, dynamic pears. Friendly environment. Easy access to education. NetApp technology can be inspirational.

    Cons

Field offices neglected. Still selling 'by the box'. Immature services offerings without enough investment in growth. Every role regardless of function is seen as a sales role - too much time is spent delivering and analyzing sales with non-sales staff. Travel is too much a part of the culture. Tendency to announce initiatives and then under-support or inconsistently support them.

    Advice to Management

Invest heavier in professional services. Recognize field work more outside California. Invest more in competitive analysis including competitive services. Talk sales numbers only with sales teams. Get post-sales delivery members out of pre-sales.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The technology is cool and exciting, if a bit slow to be adopted. Co-workers are still enthusiastic. You feel like you're working for the "good guys".

    Cons

Lack of management vision, big company bureaucracy is creeping in.
Force you to spend your vacation time during two shutdown weeks.

    Advice to Management

Culture is falling apart and upper management's words ring hollow with the employees.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, decent benefits, flexible work schedule, coworkers are generally friendly and willing to help

    Cons

Corporate culture is nonexistent (NetApp was consistently rated in the Top Ten places to work until 2013/14, but now barely makes top 100), senior leaders care more about shareholders than employees (and they do not attempt to hide that fact), company future is still uncertain

    Advice to Management

Many positive efforts have been made to "right the ship" by senior leadership, but employees are tired of hearing/worrying about layoffs and other cost-cutting measures. It's time we shift the focus back to innovation and employee empowerment.
