I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great first job, ramping up on various technologies.

    Cons

Mediocre morale for all; all middle managers are ex-IBM types who care more about their position against others vs improving the company's efficiency and operating costs. Management continuously rejected improvements in processes, systems and automation because it took away from the metrics which senior leadership used to judge them, and thus impacted their personal metrics.

    Lack of product vision

    Advice to Management

Engineering managers need to be technically skilled and not just for doing people management.

    Pros

great people, challenging work environment, from director on down, it was one of the best work environments i have been a part of. i miss the great people there!

    Cons

senior management comes and goes, there was a RIF every year, not merit based, but politicallly motivated
there is so much energy wasted in dealing with the bloated upper management
that it often results in missed opportunities. it is difficult to make strategic impact.

    Advice to Management

george kurian needs to streamline his organization and make it more flat.

I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly, collaborative atmosphere. Used to have a great culture.

    Cons

Too much bureaucracy stifles efficiency and innovation. Bloated middle management runs the business like high school. If you're not in the clique, you don't get promoted and you're not listened to. Senior management struggling to find a place for the company in the new virtual storage environment.

    Advice to Management

Focus less on making the shareholders happy, and more on making the employees happy. Shareholders come and go, but good employees are what make a great company. There was a reason it was #1 on the Fortune list of great companies to work for, and there is a reason it's not even on the list today. Let employees rate their manager, get rid of the poorly-rated ones.

I have been working at NetApp full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Opportunities are available if you connect and reach out to different people. There are some outstanding people who really do live the NetApp values and are great to work with.

    Cons

For every great person at NetApp are a number of very difficult people. Some are in big leadership positions and are secured. Some are day-to-day contributors and NetApp is too nice to do anything about them. Layoffs seem arbitrary and doesn't necessarily weed out these difficult, unproductive folks. Salary seems to be on the lower range for Silicon Valley.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to identify people who are leeches and bringing other people down and either remediate the problem or get rid of it. It hurts the rest of the population when they are still there and are impossible to remove.

I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

12+ years. Great culture! Relationships are important to get work done which worked out good for me. Overall a positive experience. Compensation and benefits are great.

    Cons

Leadership changes impacted business and ability to scale and transition in difficult declining industry. Annual reductions in force impacted morale.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent. Right size the company once and for all!

I worked at NetApp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits. Good product with lots of potential.

Probably still a decent place to work if you aren't in support.

    Cons

Working in support used to be a great place. You had time to follow up and work with customers, and they weren't focused on Metrics.

They shifted the focus to Metrics and after laying off about half the support center and the workload was unchanged. Instead of focusing on solving problems you were just fighting fires.

Lots of tools available to do the job, but many of them have a lot of use ability issues.

There is definitely a clique within the company that gets promoted and advanced faster if you know and work with the right people.

Morale was low when I departed and turnover seemed to be accelerating.

    Advice to Management

Managers should NOT be remote to their staff if it can be helped.
I had 4 different managers in 3 years. 2 local, 2 remote. It was always better with a local manager.

Work on actually balancing the workload across the teams and sites.

Continue to make the organization more flat by removing layers of bureaucracy and focus on listening to your front line workers. Seriously, listen to the support team directly.
