I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great pay and benefits, challenging engineering problems, weekly beer bash, and a decent “get things done” environment for a big company. Great place to start or end your career!

    Cons

Being successful in Engineering without politics is tough. There is a lot of cliquey, mafioso-type attitudes at the senior / principle engineer and technical director level; merit at that level seems based on who you know not what you can get done. Engineering environment is lagging, circa de 1990. If you’re looking to leverage new or Open Source technologies then, with a few exceptions, you should look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Don’t be so enamored with seniority. During my time I worked with a lot of young talent with fresh ideas that were shot down by engineers in senior positions (for seemingly no reason other that’s maybe job protection?). Be wary of “cancer” masquerading as top engineers.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I believe this company may still have some good DNA. It is hard to believe that such a great place to work can change so drastically. I believe it will recover again to an acceptable level where employees can recover trust and loyalty. Not everything is about the bottom line.

    Cons

No work life balance, no job stability, no promotions, no consideration for the employees been laid off from the US. The company is shifting most of the work and with this the opportunities outside the US. It is a great opportunity for the Bangalore employees to prove themselves!

    Advice to Management

Karma comes with action and not with words! People work for people.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

I worked at NetApp for 10 years. Great place to work, good middle management and excellent benefits. The vast majority of people there enjoy being there and driving the company forward. After the recent changes, I expect them to recover lost ground quickly.

    Cons

The last CEO was too slow to make the changes required and also kept some of the wrong people at senior executive level.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on new technologies , hire wisely and keep current employees happy. Getting top college grads should remain a priority but don't overlook current and past employees that can help business grow.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Excellent benefits. Good product with lots of potential. Probably still a decent place to work if you aren't in support.

    Cons

Working in support used to be a great place. You had time to follow up and work with customers, and they weren't focused on Metrics. They shifted the focus to Metrics and after laying off about half the support center and the workload was unchanged. Instead of focusing on solving problems you were just fighting fires. Lots of tools available to do the job, but many of them have a lot of use ability... issues. There is definitely a clique within the company that gets promoted and advanced faster if you know and work with the right people. Morale was low when I departed and turnover seemed to be accelerating.

    Advice to Management

Managers should NOT be remote to their staff if it can be helped. I had 4 different managers in 3 years. 2 local, 2 remote. It was always better with a local manager. Work on actually balancing the workload across the teams and sites. Continue to make the organization more flat by removing layers of bureaucracy and focus on listening to your front line workers. Seriously, listen to the support team... directly.

I worked at NetApp full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

NetApp was an awesome place to work. Executive that was in place in the distant past was excellent and was able to pull it through the dot com bust. Since Dan left has totally changed, they totally missed the boat on cloud and are now paying for it. Culture used to be the primary thing that made it a great place to work but that has been lost. It is now a cut throat culture. One of the reasons that so many people... stayed for so long but are now being dismissed without consideration.

    Cons

Mis-management has it going down the tubes. Multiple reductions in force occurring each year. Work life becoming unmanageable as there are fewer and fewer people to do the work.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees and deal with them honestly and fairly.
