I worked at Netflix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Total freedom to do outstanding work if you are up to the task. Great coworkers and colloberative environment to supply the best entertainment possible anywhere, any time all over the world.

    Cons

Having that freedom to excel comes the same freedom for everybody else, including your boss. If they just don't like you they have the freedom to fire you without any buy in from anybody else. They have complete freedom to do so without any solid justification, no matter how good everybody else thinks you are. Hence frequent shock when people hear so and so got fired when everybody that worked with them thought they were a rock star. This is setting the seed for large scale office politics.

    Advice to Management

Continue the stellar work, Netflix is going gang busters. Continue to work on those barriers to entry. Keep a close eye on the culture, of course it will evolve but steer it in the right direction constantly. Also because senior execs have been at the company a long time does not necessarily mean they are the right fit for the company currently.

I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Freedom and Responsibility from the culture deck is true Super smart people that love what they do Awesome brand Compensation is top of market

    Cons

Things move quickly; sometimes hard to keep up High performing culture means there is pressure, but deliver rather than worry and you will be fine

    Advice to Management

As we grow we need to consider other means of communication. Memo's are great but we need to find more efficient means of communicating.

Current Employee - Director of Engineering in Los Gatos, CA

I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Excellent environment for smart and motivated SW devs. Very little politics. Technology leader. Very focused on streaming video on demand. Value smart devs, not 24-7 heros. Tremendous opportunity to influence video and entertainment industries.

    Cons

If you are a task-oriented dev, if you need an architect or manager to give you a list of deliverables, you will not do well at Netflix. If you are a control-freak you will not do well.

I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fast-moving. Few bureaucratic distractions. Willing to make big, disruptive changes quickly. The move to original content was smart and will propel growth well into the future. If you function well in a meritocracy, then you will likely be successful at Netflix.

    Cons

They're getting big, and that growth is adding pressure to sacrifice some elements of their culture that made them unique and a desirable place to work. The quality of talent getting hired or promoted now is much less impressive than in the earlier years. The environment is increasingly political, which may be related to the hiring/promotion of more average, less-impressive employees.

I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Management is not afraid to experiment and try new things. Rapid development. High trust culture. Inventing the future.

    Cons

If you don't like change, ambiguity or are uncomfortable in a place where you get to use your own judgement a lot, it wouldn't be a good fit.

I have been working at Netflix full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Incredibly talented, smart, driven coworkers across every function of the organization. Unusually organized and efficiently run. Feel lucky if you get the opportunity to be part of such an amazing place and such an incredible time. It is rare.

    Cons

New head of Talent is not the right person to be leading and shaping the culture of Netflix. There are many concerns echoed about her throughout the company and worries that with her at the helm, the sacred secret sauce will start to spoil.

    Advice to Management

Be critical throughout the leadership team in addition to the rest of the organization when it comes to A players. Also, it might be time to step back and reevaluate the way compensation is structured. Many folks have voiced being frustrated and dissatisfied in their roles but acknowledge they are paid higher than anywhere else so chose to stay.

I worked at Netflix full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Netflix's commitment to attracting highly-motivated, creative thinkers throughout the organization means clever solutions and great ideas can come from anywhere at anytime.

    Cons

There is a certain pressure to perform that comes from the level of freedom granted that results in a percieved sink or swim mentality.

    Advice to Management

When I left, there was very little reward or recognition given to managers who mentored or successfully developed staff.
