I worked at Netflix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They pay a ridiculous amount of money.

    Cons

Horrible culture, everyone is afraid they will get fired any second. People hire their own friends/groups or people with less skills/experience so they can defend themselves against weaker employees and throw them under the bus. Lord help you if you don't know anyone when you get hired to form a posse' with.

    Advice to Management

Stop with all your nonsense pitch deck, it's dated, old and you aren't hired the best talent away from Google, FB, Amazon....the sooner you realize you are just a content company, and maybe pay reasonable salaries with reasonable fostering environment the better. Just ask yourself: how many employees would leave if you cut their salary. Probably every one.

I have been working at Netflix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    High pay, freedom and responsibility.

    Cons

Everything else. If you want to work 90 hours a week, have no family life, and still get fired after nothing but glowing reviews, then this place is for you! In my case, I gave direct, actionable feedback about a colleague, and that led to my dismissal. The culture deck says feedback is never used to retaliate - but that's not true at all. So fair warning - if you give someone honest feedback about how to improve in their position, be prepared for that to bite you later on. Politics is real here - people are retained or promoted based on who they know, and people are so routinely fired here, regardless of their performance, that everyone is numb to it.
Glad to see my time here coming to an end. If you like playing dirty politics at work, then you've found a good place. If you want psychological safety at work, keep moving.

    Advice to Management

    Don't fire excellent people.

I worked at Netflix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is amazing, and kitchen is well stocked.

    Cons

Hiring is a joke. There is a culture of fear you will get fired, so everyone tends to hire people who are less talented then they are. So you are starting out with B level players hire C who hire D. And all live in fear they will get canned. The code base is blogged about and presented very well, but it's a streaming company. Their value is content and your technology doesn't matter. Rarely do/did we hire anyone away from a real tech company (Google, Apple, Facebook, etc). Those who work here want the money, and then stay to defend their employment status b/c they now spend more and change their lifestyle, versus change their skills by being better engineers.

I have been working at Netflix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

top of the market compensation and good product.

    Cons

Very political and the culture of fear is real. People will bad-mouth you behind your back, just to save their jobs and since there are no HR processes/rules or documentation, your entire existence will depend on manager. Talking of which, personally I had two managers so far:

One who never led bigger teams before, he said inappropriate/unprofessional things all the time (mind you, Netflix is supposed to hire only experienced people).

The other one was a macho, drinking type. He always favored the ones who went out with him drinking. If you were not into drinking/socializing/alpha male communication style - too bad!

Summary: If you only care about money, this place is for you but if you want an environment with a positive culture you should look elsewhere.

    I worked at Netflix full-time

    Pros

Fat paycheck that is above the industry norm. It is all cash no stock grants, so they give you freedom to spend/invest the money as you want. If all you care about is the money this is the perfect place for you to work.

    Cons

Very political environment. Management is clueless and is more interested in promoting themselves to upper mangement. Suck up and kick down culture. No collaboration between teams, they are out to get each other and throw you under the bus. Constant fear pervades within Individual contributor roles as they are not sure if they will be around next week. Company HR brags about how they are not shy about letting people go.

    Advice to Management

Wake up before the company is driven into ground. As the culture says freedom and responsibility, there are no financial controls on many things. Lot of spend activities that are bordering unethical.

    Pros

Good Salary and comfortable physical environmen,t but the treatment of women has caused a disturbing culture of sexual degradation for women.

    Cons

Controversy and decline into pornography DVD's has led to workplace sexual inappropriateness from management. When the DVD "Kink" came in....dignity and respect for women in this company went out the door. It is sad that what was once a good company has declined into porno.

    Advice to Management

Stop allowing Not Rated films and porno.

    Pros

None. Maybe the pay but I received a better offer from my current employer.

    Cons

Political, bureaucratic, catty, micro-managing environment. Inexperienced management. No growth opportunities. Absolutely zero work life balance. Please do yourself a favor and listen to the other reviews on here and work literally anywhere else.

I worked at Netflix full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great Pay. Benefits and perks. Catered Food.

    Cons

No proper training. No room for error or else you will get fired culture. Politics. Arrogant Managers.
I worked at Netflix for almost 5 years and I've always had great feedback during 360 reviews except for 1 person. That person who was new to the company gave me a bad review last year and that's the reason I lost my job. My manager made that review as a back-up to lay me off and totally lied that I am no longer fit for the job. Feeling betrayed and unjustly fired.

    Advice to Management

Be aware.. What goes around comes around!

I worked at Netflix full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good "brand" for your resume, I guess. Outsiders will be impressed, if only because the PR machine has been in overdrive convincing people that this is still an innovative company. But a stock price bubble does not equal innovation.

    Cons

Most of the honest reviews on here (meaning those not written by HR) have already covered it, but it's a terrible place to work - a pressure-cooker environment full of overpaid but insecure bosses who manage through fear and intimidation. Crazy high turnover in every group, lots of good people getting pushed out all the time by their managers. Then those people are blamed and insulted once they're gone and unable to defend themselves. The company also stopped innovating long ago. The salary, though substantial, is not worth it, especially when you see the C-level insiders routinely cashing out millions in shares like thieves in the night. Hmmm, what do they know that everyone else doesn't? Look elsewhere - there are many other more humane, ethical, and socially rewarding places to get paid well...like Wall Street.

    Advice to Management

Keep selling as many shares as possible before the Wall Street lemmings finally figure you guys out. You have done a great job of this so far.

I worked at Netflix full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You're given independence and the ability to do your job how you see fit - some of the time. Most of the time management runs around like a chicken with their collective head cut off and priorities constantly change.

    Cons

    - The salaries are competitive, but not particularly high, despite what their so called slide deck proclaims. Keep in mind that your stock purchase and "bonus" is included, so $160k at Google is the same as $210k at Netflix.

    - Constant threats of firing, a culture of fear and throwing other employees under the bus to save your own skin. The threats of firing lead to crunch and absurd stress levels.

    - Employees aren't as intelligent as other high tech firms, they're hired more for the ability to play corporate politics than technical skill.

    - To follow on the above, the average stay here seems to be about a year. Understand that Netflix isn't an engineering company, it's an entertainment company and a fragile streaming infrastructure and clunky front end is built to consume that entertainment. But content is king, not the technology, and it never will be.

    Advice to Management

I'd recommend working on technology a bit more. With the continual turnover and exodus of engineers, the technology and products are a house of cards.
