I have been working at Netflix as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free subscription, relatively high pay for the work, fun atmosphere

    Cons

Completely mismanaged, focus on average call time rather than customer service

    Advice to Management

I understand labor is expensive, but customer service is more important than cost. Rather than outsourcing to 3rd party call centers that don't know how to answer generic questions about your service and worrying about getting customers off the line, direct those calling to educated representatives who can help them with any issue and not worry about call times. Granted, you don't want people carrying out personal conversations all day, but helping an elderly customer who is not tech savvy or trying to handle a complex billing issue should not be penalized as those are the customers you want to help in order to retain their business.

I worked at Netflix full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Bleeding edge tech company, with great product.

    Cons

Management cares more about metrics than your work/life balance. The buck always get's passed downhill.

    Advice to Management

Invest time into long term employees.

I worked at Netflix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    The pay rate is excellent.

    Cons

the time constraints are tight, the margin of error was not there and the ramifications of failure, be it machine issues, management issues, transportation issues were very harsh. Errors should be minimized, but most problems are out of the control of the management team such as a truck breaking down or a computer crashing.

I worked at Netflix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - great physical work environment in Los Gatos
    - great co workers: highly motivated, intelligent, impressive experiences. Netflix hires people at the peak of their games
    - at the time (2007-2010), it was an exciting time of growth in the online streaming space, with consistent growth in the DVD space; fun to be on the cutting edge, and high growth.
    - great compensation; employees are well paid

    Cons

    - there is a constant sword of damocles (i.e. the threat of removal) hanging over your head. even when you think you are doing well, you can be released unexpectedly, at a moment's notice. (this results in a culture of fear)
    - there is no career path; Netflix hires you to perform a job, and once that job is over, it's easier for them to let you go rather than retrain or relocate you.
    - this is not the place to be if you want work/life balance; not family friendly

    Advice to Management

    - missteps from a year ago (i.e. 2011 - Qwikster) have caused a loss of confidence in management
    - there are still lots of people in the US that want to rent DVDs; much better selection, and much better accessibility. It feel like Netflix is now content to ignore them and move on. What happened to the great customer service that built the brand?

    Pros

Great compensation, decent hours, nice employees (below upper management).

    Cons

No clear communication. The management team was not on the same page and would regularly countermand each other. Need for better process to clearly define the work requirements.

    Advice to Management

    Get on the same page.

Not at all a fun place to work, very hard to build relationships

    Pros

The engineers are the smartest most capable bunch I have worked with in my career.

    Cons

The executives have no clue how to run the company. Their success is based on luck and they are proud to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

    Advice to Management

Get a new marketing and PR team.

    Pros

Freedom to use latest technology. Large customer base. Smart engineers. Profitable company able to hire and properly resource development effort. Well known brand. Product is loved by most customers, and available just about everywhere. Competition is behind. Clear leader in unlimited streaming.

    Cons

Senior leadership very confused. Communication from the top done very poorly. Lots of knee-jerk reactions and fire drills. Software complexity is very high, but cross functional coordination is poor. Poor management of growth. Lots of really bad decisions made. Hired too fast in 2010-2011 (and added too many mediocre managers), and now they are paying the price.

    Advice to Management

Break up the old boys club and bring in skilled senior management from the outside who know how to run a global company at scale. Engineering talent is good, but current management is lacking ability to handle the company's growth and properly leverage the talent.

    Pros

No vacation policy and flexbility. High pay, which is meant to replace some of the perks that other companies offer. Interesting and fun industry. Employees are smart and work as a team for the greater good.

    Cons

The "freedom and responsiblity" culture works for some, as long as you do not disagree with management. There is very high turnover. When people are let go, they are surprised. People are afraid to make mistakes, which makes for a stressful enviroment. I have never felt comfortable working there. Management is out of touch with its customers and makes hasty decisions that contradict common sense. Employees suffer because of this. Why would the former CFO leave when the stock on its way to its peak?

    Advice to Management

Your employees are valuable resources. Treat them as such.

-fun work environment (IF you have a good team, and manager)
    -good location

    Cons

    -high stress
    -high turnover
-no communication between ops and CSR's when new things are launched
-constant fear of doing something wrong
-there is no way that we can 'relate', 'assure', make the customer feel good, and fix their issue in under 4 minutes and 30 seconds (and get a Yes response 95.5% of the time)

    Advice to Management

Better communication about new NRD's or other things being launched.
