    Pros

One of the best things about working for the Board of Ed in New Haven are the people I work with and the students I coach.

    Pros

If you love the arts, this art school is a wondrous place to be. The curriculum features art, music, dance, video, photography, and theatre taught by talented teachers and professional artists. The students are gifted and it is a joy to see their talents bloom. There is an artistic director who guides the program. There is a collaborative atmosphere. The curriculum also includes academic subjects and a science fair.

    Cons

New Haven is a big city with a very large school system, and it can take some time and navigational skills to get to school meetings held at the various locations

    Advice to Management

Treasure your Arts Magnet School. Always keep it as vibrant as it is. There are not many districts in Connecticut that are specifically designed for creatives.

I worked at New Haven Public Schools (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Challenging work environment
    - CEO, at the time, cared about the students
    - Hard work is eventually recognized at all staff levels
    - Will at least allow flexible schedules to pursue advanced degree, although they do not reimburse.

    Cons

    - Compensation is low, compared to other school districts, for non-instructional employees
    - Management, for the most part, does not listen to employee feedback
    - There is simply no policy for staff development for non-instructional/operations staff

    Advice to Management

Review non-instructional employee/manager compensation against similar organizations and ensure it is in-line. In addition, provide career pathing/progression for non-instruction/operations staff. Remember, your staff is your greatest resource!
