    Great place to work

    Pros

CEO is extremely involved and approachable. Project managers and CEO genuinely care about career growth of the employees. Lots of free reign to carve out your own career path including opportunities for training, conferences, working on multiple contracts, etc. Small company with friendly, collaborative culture that encourages personal and academic development. Interesting contracts that include latest and greatest scientific/geospatial/IT work. Really smart people that are willing to share their knowledge and skills.

    Cons

A person who needs rigid company structure or tight project management would not do well here. Employees are expected to manage their own time and project deadlines and there’s isn’t very much of a company hierarchy, but NLT tends to bring people in who can succeed in this type of environment.

    A Small Business Done Right

Sep 28, 2016 - Dev in Washington, DC

    Pros

New Light forgoes the glass and steel downtown office building for something more modest. They also manage with a smaller than usual in office/admin staff which keeps overhead to a minimum. Company resources are returned to the employee through salary, training, side project resources, etc. It's an excellent place to work with direct contact to the CEO and project managers. Employees are encouraged to strike a good work/life balance (although this can be difficult with rigid federal contracts). The company generally stays out of the way and allows employees to interact directly with their customers with minimal interference and no micro-managing. On-site contract employees, in my experience, are treated the same as feds.

    Cons

NLT employees are dedicated, educated, and (mostly) young in their professional careers. It would be helpful to bring on and keep a handful of "rockstars" within each team. Having some highly skilled technical employees with decades of experience could boost knowledge, interest, and productivity of younger team members. NLT is not a massive contracting firm so the loss of a single customer can be painful for both the employees and company. Expanding the number of contracts and variety of work could help alleviate some of the difficulty and allow the company to retain staff. NLT management can sometimes be too hands off with customers. If a customer is running to the end of a work order or time period then they should be repeatedly informed of the consequences well in advance. Contract lapses are hard on employees and customers.

Great Experience Working at New Light Technologies

Sep 29, 2016 - GIS Project Manager in Washington, DC

    Pros

NLT, in cooperation with its primary customers, was very supportive in providing continuing professional development opportunities. The CEO, Ghermay Araya, is very encouraging, available, and has a great positive attitude towards employees. Although employees are dispersed at customer sites, the company sponsors regular employee get-togethers, both formal and informal, that enable team building, idea sharing, and collaboration. The company makes great use of cloud-based resources for email, file sharing, HR, project management and more to facilitate remote access and collaboration. Being a small company, employees can be expected to participate in a wide variety of tasks. I look at this as a positive because it provides opportunities to expand skills. Despite the company’s small size, it has in place solid, well-defined processes, such as a Project Management Office (PMO), and Systems Engineering/IT Tech support team that keep operations running smoothly and provide assistance on work issues.

    Cons

The company focus is on GIS consulting services. However, within this huge realm of possibilities, the company does not have a well-defined expertise in a specific sector. Thus NLT competes in the marketplace with a large number of other GIS generalist companies.

A fantastic and dynamic place to carve out your career

    Pros

The company has no complicated management chain, communication happens with the CEO directly in most instances which allow easy communication of issues. The opportunity for training and professional improvement is incredible. The CEO himself is a fantastic person and honestly seems to care about the welfare of the people around him. The company has been successful for over 15 years and that bodes well for the future. Given a lot of free will to make your career your own here, if you have the initiative you can go far.

    Cons

The staff seems to be more on the project management side than the technical side. This seems to be changing currently but it has been an issue finding people to do the actual work rather than manage the work being done. Focus seems to be on large federal contracts rather than diversifying into smaller contracts with various clients. This seems to be a bad avenue for sustainability. Management of their large contracts seems to be passive as well with no one aggressively seeking renewals or actively engaging the client. Seem to just be waiting for it to fall in place.

    Best place I've ever worked.

    Pros

Any company can talk about being about people -- but NLT really is. They are there for you and will back you up in any difficult situation. Smart people doing interesting things with cool tech and making a difference both within the company and for the customer. Excellent opportunities to acquire new skills and apply them to real world problems. Always something interesting going on.

    Cons

Can't completely escape some small company scaling issues -- sometimes it felt as if we were below critical mass. Concentration on public sector meant the place was vulnerable to disruption from customer fiscal uncertainty during congressional budget shutdowns.

    Great Company

    Pros

Best company I have worked for so far. A lot of chances to do different types of work. Benefits are very good for a small company. Like family.

    Cons

Because it is a small company there is not a lot of room for advancement and you sometimes have to "wear multiple hats.". Teams work at client offices, so it can be hard to get to know the people on other teams.
