    Positive Outlook

I have been working at New Rochelle City School District full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great pay Flexible schedule Great work environment (fellow CSDNR workers are, more often than not, genuinely nice people)

    Cons

Communication between departments/different sectors in the school district (and even within the same school) is sometimes lacking. As expected, you occasionally deal with students with behavioral issues (sometimes support is lacking/the status quo is not 100% pro-substitute teacher)

    Negative Outlook

I worked at New Rochelle City School District full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great students and families, lots of diversity.

    Cons

I worked for 13 years as an educator and every year teacher morale declined and student engagement did too. There were some great teachers but there were so many others that didn't do their job and everyone new it but no one did anything about it. There was so much gossip it seemed more like high school than a place of employment. Students deserve better, it's completely unacceptable. There wasn't any real leadership, no one innovating, no one motivating teachers to do things in a more meaningful way for students. Leadership was too removed from the classroom to actually be effective.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at New Rochelle City School District

    Pros

Strong diverse district w commitment to excellence! A great place to work and teach. Strong efforts by the district and board to keep class size down and build a healthy school community. Great colleagues.. lots of talented teachers most of them will share information and help each other out. Strong support by most parents.

    Cons

Like all public schools, we are under fire from corporate reform. Test prep and anxiety is a reality that will not go away until parents demand the removal of high stakes testing. There is a growing #optout movement in Westchester and the Lederman v King case may improve matters. New administrators in central and buildings make it hard to judge where we're going in the next several years. That's not a negative... but it is an unknown that could go either way.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook

I worked at New Rochelle City School District full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Usually, security guards watch doors Substitute teachers must be certified teachers.

    Cons

Student disciplinary rules are not enforced. Teachers frequently fail to provide lesson plans, and the students do not cooperate with an unstructured class session. The administration expects substitutes to handle unassisted students who provoke conflict among others and who insult the substitutes. No sick days, no vacation days, low daily pay for a full-time job. No career opportunity available.
