I have been working at New Visions for Public Schools full-time

    Pros

If you are interested in supporting the improvement of education in NYC, New Visions provides a host of opportunities to work with an extremely smart and dedicated set of colleagues to help schools. The organization works in data systems, teacher development, curriculum, college readiness, community engagement, and more. It is a supportive place to work and there are lots of chances to learn from all of the new initiatives. Great colleagues. Good benefits and compensation for a non-profit.

    Cons

Not necessarily a con, but something to know: the organization is fast-paced and things are always evolving based on the policy environment, grant opportunities, changes in the DOE, etc. Be ready to be nimble and don't get too attached to any one thing!

I have been working at New Visions for Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

They give you opportunities to learn on the job (dev school, workshop R for programmers) and given resources for PDs outside of the company. They are incredibly supportive and make moves to be inclusive and diverse. They are very mission-oriented and it really shows; you feel connected to your work and purpose every day. They also pay incredibly well for a non-profit and really make sure you're taken care of. The company grants 20 days off per year along with federal holidays and anything that the schools observe (about 12 days). Also, the work week is only 35 hours and there is flexibility for remote work.

    Cons

The org is going through some growing pains. While it's good that they're expanding, there are sometimes some communication breakdowns and scrambling. People often work outside of work because everyone is so mission-driven.

I worked at New Visions for Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The former President, who had been around for 25ish years really cared about living out the organization’s mission and hired a thoughtful and effective leadership team to carry out his vision.

    Cons

The organization’s structure and work has changed a lot in the past 3 years.

    Advice to Management

seek more opportunities for feedback from staff members.

I have been working at New Visions for Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Co-planning sessions within departments. Lesson plan feedback from supervising Assistant Principal or Department Head. Small classroom and supportive SpEd Director.

    Cons

Micro-management is at an extreme level. Leadership rarely trust faculty to do assignments on own. Communication between administrative leaders and faculty is often last minute and unclear. Protocols are consistently changing. Loss of instructional days for testing. Then heavy emphasis on fast data analysis and reporting everything for record keeping.

    Advice to Management

New Visions Charter Schools was open ground for me to build my curriculum and strengthen my classroom management over the years. However there are not as many supportive resources for Elective teachers (the Arts, Gym, Health, Seminar) as there are for Core teachers (Math, English, Sciences, History). Network PDs were irrelevant to real classroom issues. Leadership team are not experienced in all content areas and miscommunicate school's objectives and agendas.
