I worked at New York Air Brake full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The employees are welcoming and friendly. This is a good place to work if you need to get your foot in the door and start developing experience.

    Cons

Most employees work in a warehouse environment, hence it is dirty, loud, and not very well weathered for the hot months. Orders tend to be backed up so it is a fast-paced environment.

    Advice to Management

There is a distinct separation between the workers on the floor and the managers in the main office and the managers give the appearance of not being accessible to workers.

I worked at New York Air Brake full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay grade is better than the rest of the area. People that work on the floor are easy to get along with for the most part.

    Cons

Management has their favorites. You're just a number if you're on the floor. If you don't bow down, you don't last long. Union shop, but the union is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Care about the people that actually allow you to have a job here. The guys on the floor are the reason why you get a paycheck every week. Appreciate them.

"Don't Expect Any Training on The Complicated and Frustrating KPI Reports"

I worked at New York Air Brake full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The salary and benefits were not bad for the area; however, they are nowhere near what other people in similar positions would earn in a more prosperous area. Watertown, NY, is depressed.

    Cons

Management was very arrogant. Additionally, there is a specific monthly report, a Key Performance Indicator report, that is an absolute bear to compile. The woman I replaced had transferred to another department and was at war with my boss (her former boss), and would not provide me with training out of spite for my boss. Unfortunately, she was the only one who knew how to prepare that department's segment of the report. Furthermore, my boss continually sabotaged me whenever I attempted to teach myself how to prepare the report, thinking that it would make my predecessor look bad for not assisting me. I spent about 60 frustrating and infuriating days trying to do my best and make sense of it all to no avail. I left and never looked back.

    Advice to Management

Provide some formal training other than OTJ. Have a widely accessible knowledge base with directions for all departments on how to prepare their portion of the KPI. Management: stop walking around with your nose in the air, pretending that you're somehow superior to others. And that includes the very top management team in Watertown. Ironically, the upper C-Level team in Germany--to whom Watertown management answers--was very approachable and helpful.

I worked at New York Air Brake full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great group of people to work with as far as hourly (production and trades people), technicians , engineering, and lower level supervisors. Production people paid well.

    Cons

Upper level management is completely out of touch with the production floor, treats people as expendable. Plant manager/CEO rarely shows his face on the floor. Skilled trades people are way underpaid, they make very little more than production people. After two record profit years in a row, the union work force had to give huge concessions or be replaced by a non union workforce. Union is extremely weak, bows to management on a regular basis and ignores the skilled workers since they make up less than 5 percent of the workforce. Topheavy, there are more than 2 salary people to every hourly worker. Disgruntled workforce across the board, hourly and salary.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your people and they will take care of you.Replace the plant manager/CEO.

    Pros

Lots of young engineers, strong sense of community, laid back work environment, lots of training, clear career path

    Cons

Low pay, hard to get people to stay in Watertown, very low retention in test lab, some projects have unrealistic deadlines

    Advice to Management

Need to find a way to get more young engineers to come and stay. Too many "yes men" on sales team that set impossible goals.
