I have been working at New York City Department of Education full-time for more than a year

    Pros

—Powerful Union: ensures employee benefits and helps prevent employees from being taken advantage of by the city/state bureaucracy —Job security —Good benefits: pension/retirement etc

    Cons

—Powerful Union: poorly performing teachers and staff, or even those who are outright derelict in their duties, are protected and essentially untouchable by the city/school administration. —Most rumors about NYC public education are true; the schools are hit or miss. Some are very fine institutions and others are absolutely mismanaged to the point of total dysfunction (such as where I work).

I worked at New York City Department of Education full-time

    Pros

Steady and good benefits. Get to work with some very amazing educators. Frequent "recovery" breaks.

    Cons

Bureaucratic nightmare. A lot of making it look good to make Principals look good. For many of the schools, students are passed on just for the sake of numbers and because principals are scared for their school to look poorly. There is a one way accountability that makes teachers the sole culprit when students fail. Everything is uniform for the sake of being uniform with no substantive value to education.

    Advice to Management

Do away with the Principles Academy and empower teachers. Stop treating education as a business.

Summers off, good benefits, pension, retirement, etc. Days end relatively early and there are plenty of days off. Good pay for a teacher relative to everywhere else.

    Cons

Experience will depend highly on your school. Difficult to take days off. Lots of paperwork.

I worked at New York City Department of Education

    Pros

Decent pay for fair hours. Once you've learned the ropes at one school, they're more or less the same everywhere Good benefits

    Cons

It's very expensive to live in NYC. You can't live alone on a teacher salary. Also, kids get away with just about anything.

    Advice to Management

    Be more fair in observations
