I have been working at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Super progressive organization. Dr Bassett is leading the country in making the health department a beacon of racial equity and social justice. The agency is well-funded, diverse and full of really smart, great people who truly believe in the work they are doing. Great worklife balance. I work 7-8 hours a day with a 1 hour lunch break, lots of worksite wellness initiatives, good benefits.

    Cons

Not much room for growth; you kind of stay in the position you're hired for unless an official opening for a more senior position comes up around. The location isn't the best. Long Island City has gotten much busier in the last few years with more restaurants and shops opening up but there's lots of construction and it's not as iconic as working in Manhattan.

I have been working at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Work is challenging and can be extremely rewarding. There is a definite sense of truly making a difference. Everyone can have voice; however, there is a definite protocol. This agency is very concerned about improving the quality of life for New Yorkers. Nice work environment; easily accessible by public transportation; parking can be pretty costly. Great place to work if social change is your mantra. They are the real deal.

    Cons

Incredible workloads with incredibly low wages. Caseworker and Social Worker titles are frequently interchanged without the benefit of equal pay. There is no overtime and you must work additional hours in order to stay on top of the heavy caseloads. Huge disparity in pay between management and staff. Not much room for growth. DOHMH often utilizes temp workers and outside consultants in lieu of promoting from within. Like all NYC agencies without being certified job security can be challenging.

    Pros

Mostly easy work with superiors that don't breathe your back too much. Relaxed workplace as long as you do what you're supposed too.

    Cons

Boring job mostly basically just doing a lot paper pushing. Upper management barely allows room for growth,
