I have been working at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Stable, laid back work environment. Work/life balance is amazing. Good place to learn and make mistakes without major consequences. Free healthcare benefits. Easiest job to sit in and then retire with decent benefits.

    Cons

NO promotions, NO guaranteed/regular salary increases, NO way to advance your career. They will always prioritize hiring new staff versus retention of current staff. Extreme high turn-over rate, no one in my bureau has been here longer than 5 years (except the AC and a few Directors). Open cubicle floor plan means zero privacy. Terrible cellphone service in LIC building. People will steal your food from the fridge :(

I have been working at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene

    Pros

Met a lot of great people with similar interests, got to work in a really dynamic work environment on programs that have a lot of power in the city, felt like my supervisor and the health department overall was very supportive of my ideas and my participating in any way that I wanted to.

    Cons

Feels removed sometimes from the micro level work that it is effecting, open cubicles means very little privacy while working, and the bureaucracy/levels of government to get anything done can sometimes be difficult.
