I have been working at New York Power Authority full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits, from health care to pension. Some very talented, intelligent people to work with. Organization is on the forefront of an interesting industry. Challenging, ever-changing environment. Opportunities to advance if you're smart and willing to work hard.

    Cons

Still retains some the "government mentality", though it's getting considerably better. Silo'd information is sometimes difficult to pry out of people. Political winds sometimes blow the ship in sub-optimal directions. Turnover of executive leadership has been excessive.

I have been working at New York Power Authority full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Professional atmosphere, excellent work/life balance, great employees, training opportunities, education programs and extracurricular activities are unprecedented, good salaries/benefits, great pension and retirement plan, interesting, innovative, cutting edge work. Very relaxed atmosphere. I LOVE going to work!

    Cons

Corporate structure is in silos...individual departments are very self centered which is a problem. Very little interdepartmental innovative collaboration. And, a lot of competition between departments. Many duplicated jobs with same or similar job functions...very confusing.

    Advice to Management

Restructure and streamline corporate structure. Put Priority on the corporate good and not allow senior managers and above to self promote. Too many egos in sr management. Get rid of the silo mentality!! In particular, the HR Department needs a complete overhaul. Too many complicated processes that adds to the workload and HR staff need HR and Customer Service training. Most are not personable or approachable.

I worked at New York Power Authority full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people were friendly, the benefits were very good, there were perks like parking passes (which are gold in Albany), company cars, and regular training/personal development seminars.

    Cons

I wasn't a fan of Upstate NY winters.

I worked at New York Power Authority full-time

    Pros

Very interesting work at an organization supposedly committed to innovation

    Cons

Antiquated to an extreme at the cost of basic productivity. Experience is totally dependent on which team you're working on, some departments are entirely dysfunctional and slow down the organization in the process as time is spent avoiding those routes. Most employees/interns are there because they knew someone (often related), which is why no one can be fired. An astounding amount of office politics and drama, a lot of passive aggressive emailing. Not a place for young people. HR is unstoppable and most of the drama can be traced back there.

    Advice to Management

    CUT THE FAT

I have been working at New York Power Authority full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Benefits (PTO, health benefits), flexible working hours, lots of opportunities for training and learning

    Cons

depending on what department/group you work in, some people working there get away a lot and it's an HR nightmare. HR doesn't want to get involved in some of the volatile work environments. Some individuals are extremely inappropriate.

    Advice to Management

hold actions accountable, foster a professional work environment
