I worked at New York Power Authority full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good Benefits. NYPA is not a bad place to work if you end up in the right department or know people in top management. Regular 9-5 gig.

    Cons

CAE is a narcissist, summed up in one word. The company needs to do something about this!!
Happy I left before she had a chance to further damage my self esteem or profession. I've seen her fired someone and went to her office and started laughing so loudly, people were really shocked. Do not care how many peoples lives and career she destroys as long as she's benefitting. NYPA needs to do a better job in their recruiting process when hiring senior management.

    Advice to Management

Start engaging employees from the bottom and look to not only creating a diverse company but one of inclusion where everyone have a fair chance to succeed.

NYPA is a good company to work for that provides employees with a good work to life balance and benefits. Opportunity to work on different projects. The engineering position is very hands on which include a lot of testing on different equipment. Team members are very knowledgeable and are willing to help and answer any questions.

    Cons

Long commute and travel time on some days

    Pros

Good location, got opportunity to work with new technologies, most people are willing to show you the ropes and guide you. Many talented people. Great for people who are over 35+ and who have families. Learn as much as you can and bounce if you're young! Benefits are awesome

    Cons

Low morale is rampant throughout various workgroups. People feel limited in their growth opportunities. Highly political. They need to promote and offer salaries at a market rate

    Advice to Management

Help employees advance in their career

    Pros

very relaxed environment barely any real assignment or deadlines

    Cons

Its a dead end position with very low pay. Its govern around politics and egos from boss and upper management with vey bad moral. They are more worry about making them look good and their reputation than your well being or the team and the company. You will not progress in terms of skill sets, only a few people are competent. There's no bonus so if you have some time/years to kill before finding something better than this is it.

I have been working at New York Power Authority full-time

    Pros

Following an unfortunate, extended period of irrational austerity and mediocre (horrendous, in some cases) leadership, NYPA has turned a corner and is working hard to create a cohesive, synergistic organization. It is no longer an "us against them" mentality between management and labor.

This has been accomplished by replacing department heads and executive management with qualified, experienced leadership that are not merely yes-men or bean counters. Reason, balance, and consistency have been largely restored to the decision making process.

Another huge benefit is that NYPA is not afraid to spend money on training. Failure to perform due to lack of training is not a viable excuse in this organization.

    Cons

Opportunities for transfer from craft to management are largely limited based on formal education. Qualified, experienced candidates without a degree may be overlooked in favor of a less experienced candidate with a degree.

NYPA is a State agency, still subject to the whims of the governor. Although operational affairs have been trending positive during the past year, this has the potential to change based on nothing more than political fancy.

    Advice to Management

This is both an exciting and challenging time to work in the utility industry. Many thanks for your efforts restore a productive relationship throughout the company.
