I worked at New York Public Library full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Collaborative environment; accessible to unlimited patrons (in person and online); professional development opportunities; varied backgrounds within each unit/department

    Cons

The employment opportunities were only within the library system and not remote at the time I worked there.

    Advice to Management

My last year working within the Development department was actually 2008. The review section did not allow me to select this accurate year. As the Management structure has changed since I worked for NYPL, I have no advice to share.

I have been working at New York Public Library full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

My co-workers are like a second family which makes coming to work a joy. The atmosphere of the building itself is pleasant, working in a museum-like building is very cool.

    Cons

The pay isn't the greatest, and there seems to be some issues with implementing some policies that are at times handed down to the public facing staff by the management.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps this is common in any large organization, but the management seems to be disconnected from the day-to-day work of the librarians, and would sometimes implement certain guidelines / procedures that make the job more cumbersome rather than easier.

I worked at New York Public Library as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It is one of the biggest and greatest library systems and it reflects the way a library should operate in the digital era. I felt the impact and it was inspiring! The diversity is a big plus.

    Cons

Not so many benefits for the interns, but they do provide staff discount for the shop and the technical equipment needed.

I have been working at New York Public Library full-time

    Pros

Have learned a lot from bosses and co-workers. Been able to earn several promotions with hard work and support from bosses. Good benefits and generous time off. Rarely ever had a boring day.

    Cons

Some managers are afraid of dealing with slackers and rest of staff has to bear the burden. Upper management doesn't spend enough time getting to know their support staff and realizing what they have.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your staff better. Encourage HR to support getting rid of "dead weight" staff who make too much and do too little. Don't forget that practical experience can be just as valuable as a degree. It doesn't matter what degree an employee has, it matters whether they put their knowledge to use to benefit the institution.
