I worked at New York State Police full-time

    Pros

excellent pay, great people, It is a job you will always be proud of, and will set you up for corporate jobs in the future after retirement.

    Cons

Sometimes long hours, hazzards of police work, sometimes physically and emotionally demanding. It is a para-military organization, so things are done a certain way.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the guys on the road and the investigators as to what they need as far as equipment and support. Too many decisions being made in Albany without consulting the guys who actually do the work

I worked at New York State Police (More than 10 years)

    Pros

You have the opportunity to make significant contributions to your community. While at work or in an off duty capacity. You develop lasting and significant relationships in a strong military like environment. There's always something new and different around the corner.

    Cons

Like any job it has it's flaws in Supervision and structure. Along with the new found media contempt of law enforcement.

    Advice to Management

Look at the merit of each individual and help him/her achieve their potential. Instead of stifling their growth. Support your people and your career will take care of itself.

I worked at New York State Police full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are decent for what the job really is.

    Cons

All about numbers. Pressure tickets tickets tickets. Stetson flying away down the thruway with terrible weather. I could go on and on. Resigned and joined NCPD best move ever.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your office and be a cop.

I have been working at New York State Police full-time

    Pros

Not very deserving for any pros.

    Cons

The agency will interview you and take 3-6 months to get back to you.
They will then perform a background check for 2-3 months and ask you for ridiculous details.
They will want to speak to your current employer even without a guaranteed employment offer.
The job description will carry incomplete information on basic stuff like typical work day, vacation overtime hours, promotion prospects, etc and when asked people do not provide you clear answers.
They will be insensitive to real problems and risks people may face while they take their own time for the process.
Conclusion – The agency want all of your information and in return expect to take up a unpromising job without complete details. Please apply carefully.

    Advice to Management

Please try to work with people who face real problems due to your hiring process and understand that it is a full right of the person who is to be employed to demand clarity of what they are being offered!

I have been working at New York State Police full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to work. Good job security you don't have to worry about getting fired without a reason, everyone works together well.

    Cons

Internal disagreements. Some people are petty and hold grudges if you get promoted and they do not. Bosses can be a bit strict

    Advice to Management

Work on team building and getting everyone to work together to put out the best work from the department as a whole rather than every man for himself

I have been working at New York State Police full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are very good. A lot of different career paths are available, from uniform supervision to plain clothes BCI.

    Cons

Swing shifts, stationed away from home. All of the cons do not mean much as the pros far outweigh the cons

I have been working at New York State Police full-time

    Pros

Working with Troopers can be fun. They are a hard working bunch and most have good senses of humor.

    Cons

Like any civil service job, the civilians who have managed to stay on are overpaid and do nothing, and management refuses to acknowledge it. The new folks are underpaid and do all the work, so they get burned out and resentful. VERY little promotion potential and little recognition for hard work. It's simply not worth building a career here.

I have been working at New York State Police (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working for the state provides excellent benefits. You are able to choose the shift you work, so you can work around child care, etc.

    Cons

Morale is very low, overtime is required, management does little to address employee concerns.
