    Pros

Good company mission, beautiful cafeteria, flexible hours

    Cons

Big company that is trying, but slow to change; resource constraints of declining industry (journalism) make innovation difficult.

    Advice to Management

Allow for more risk-taking and freedom for employees.

I worked at New York Times full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Surrounded by some of the best minds in journalism. They continue to lead the way in navigating the digital disruption. However, it is still a white male dominated newsroom.

    Cons

An official policy of not promoting news assistants into editorial/reporting jobs, although some with the right mentors and connections do move beyond the menial tasks of answering phones and monitoring useless emails.

    Advice to Management

Too many of your news assistants are talented and credentialed in journalism NOT to be seen as potential reporters, producers and/or editors.
