    Approves of CEO

    I worked at Newmont Goldcorp

    Pros

Newmont Mining has an excellent business culture, they offer an excellent compensation package and the company is led by an outstanding CEO.

    Cons

Newmont is an international company, as such developing effective talent management systems is always a challenge. Career progression is somehow hindered by exposure to decision makers.

    Advice to Management

Congratulations on doing a great job at managing the business. Price of Gold is at a old time record, nevertheless, don't underestimate the importance of cost controls systems and methodologies.

    I worked at Newmont Goldcorp

    Pros

Very good leadership training and development opportunities for director and above. Very good pay and benefits packages and 4 day 10-hour/day work weeks in corporate office.

    Cons

Leadership retreat invitations for executives were not extended to certain level or area of responsibility, but to whom was "in" or friends with the right C-Suite executives. Very much a boys club, though a few women have been promoted to senior position over last two years. Forced ranking during reviews even of small teams whose performance may exceed goals. Lots of very well-paid executives at the corporate office who...

    Advice to Management

Take a hard look at your project capital spend (not EPC and development capital, but all the other projects that add up quickly) and audit AFTER the projects to determine performance of project sponsors. Do not engage in yet another failed "performance improvement" initiative until you determine why all others have failed over past 20 years.

"Hopefully things are changing now that the new CEO is in charge, but lots of old timers still remain."

    I worked at Newmont Goldcorp

    Pros

As one of the industry leaders in gold mining Newmont leads in environmental/health/safety issues. I enjoyed travelling around the world to the different sites. The science of gold mining is fascinating in and of itself, but the benefits of salary, generous 401k, stock, and pension all added to that 'shine'.

    Cons

It is a good old boys club. It has always been about who you know. Additionally, the culture is short sighted - 'if you are not moving dirt, you're not adding value.'

    Advice to Management

Dick O'Brien seems to be level headed and intent on changing the direction of the company. This review was based largely on the organization prior to his lead. Communicating vision and strategies to lower level employees is key to keeping everyone rowing in the same direction though.

I worked at Newmont Goldcorp full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company offers some of the best pay and benefits in their industry. Bonuses are based on personal performance as well as the companies performance. Company offers opportunity to work overseas on foreign assignments Company offers longevity and stability as long as you are an "insider"

    Cons

Performance ratings are run using Success Factors system and then "calibrated" by upper management which often arbitrarily reduces ratings based on overall company performance. Corporate HQ has grown exponentially during years of record profits, but growth has not produced increased profitability or functionality. Overhead burden = YES! Regional career path is still somewhat dependent on the old boys system and who...

    Advice to Management

Before cutting positions in a productive region - actually the best producing region in the company, trim the fat and excess in the corporate ivory tower. What do "Global Experts" do when you are no longer pursuing new global opportunities? If the company is encouraging an uplift in education and experience why choose to retrench to local and time served when making decisions on layoffs?
